So that's what it's for!

I learned something today, and by LJ code, I will now post it.

I have used both the sustaining (right) and soft (left) piano pedals before, but I freely admit that I have never known what the middle pedal was for. So, today, I actually looked it up.

Apparently, it is similar to the sustaining pedal, but it only sustains the keys that are being held down when you press it. So, if you need one note to keep going, but you need that hand to jump somewhere else and continue, you can key it in, and then move without it sustaining the rest of the notes. Interesting. It sounds tricky, but it might really come in handy for certain pieces.

Now, I'll need to play with it on my piano at home to try it out. I wonder what it does in combination with the right pedal?
