BCOC (Bucks County Opportunity Council)

Last year, my church began working with a group I hadn't heard of called "Circles of Opportunity". They work with the above mentioned BCOC to try to help determined people below the poverty line get above it through community support. It sounded like a neat organization, but they meet on Tuesday nights at 6:30, which means I both have to leave work early and either skip dinner or eat fast food to make it. Since I'm already doing that twice a week for bells and choir practice during the normal year, I didn't want to make it a third night, so I have never actually attended a meeting.

This spring, my generous in-laws offered us my MIL's old Grand Prix for the bargain price of $1, since she was getting a new car. My little Saturn, while a trooper still happy chugging away at almost 190K miles, has no working A/C anymore, and I can't drive it to and from work in the summer without feeling absolutely wretched. Craig usually trades cars with me for the summer, but then he's the overheating one, so this meant we'd each have a cooled car. What a blessing. :)

This morning, I met a nice Irish woman at a tag service in Doylestown to sign over the tag of my little Saturn to the BCOC. I might even get to meet the person it's going to when they come to get the car next week, but only if it's in the evening. It was my first car, and I'll miss the little thing. I'm hoping that it keeps on keepin' on and really gives someone a better chance at an easier life. Maybe I'll even pass my little car in town sometime.

I'm glad that organizations like the BCOC exist, and I wanted to let the locals know about it. I'm not sure how else they get help, but they have families that pair up with the families to offer encouragement, volunteers to do some work, and I'm sure there are financial donations, too. I love it that the community is helping itself without being forced, and that people are truly benefiting from it on all sides.

Life is good. :)
