One thing I liked about travelling abroad was that I was unlikely to see any of the people I encountered on a day-to-day basis again. Yes, I LIKED that, because meeting entirely new people every day was fun and interesting, as much as I like constants of friendship in my life as well. When I returned home to Lethbridge, it wasn't long before the whole "small world" thing became apparent as it was before I left -- but lately, it has just blown my mind! Lethbridge is a city of about 85,000 right now, I think, and I always joke that there IS no "six degrees of separation" here because we can never get beyond two! Examples:
1) I'm pretty sure I never wrote about this, but my driving job boss is the mother of my friend Dave, the videographer!! Early in the job, I had to call my boss after hours to ask her a question, so I looked up her # in the phone book. I was surprised when I recognized the number, but her last name is not the same as anyone else I know, so I thought perhaps she had the old number of someone I knew, or something. But when I searched my personal phone book, I discovered that her number was Dave's number. I didn't say anything to her on the phone about it, but I asked her in person later... "Uh, are you Dave's mom?" and she said, "You didn't know that? We've met before you started this job!" ... apparently it was a very brief hello in passing at his house, and I don't remember it at all! Dave didn't know that I worked for his mom though, so I had some fun with him on the phone until I finally revealed what I was getting at, to which he exclaimed, "YOU WORK FOR MY MOM?!" It was so funny!
2) Tanya and I went out to check out the "new Henotic" last week (did I even write about that? Our favourite venue, which had tons of live music and where Latin dancing was held, closed on May 2nd and we cried rivers of tears!). The new club is no good, by the way... it's a generic, boring Top 40 place now with your typical low-life bar crowd and a beer-soaked floor by midnight. :( Anyway, we met up with Tanya's friend Beth there, who had brought her friend, Deb... who I know because she has horses and is friends with one of my friends, Serena! Tanya knows her as well, but she didn't know that I knew her. :p In talking with Deb, it turns out I've met her niece as well, AND she is good friends with my older friend Cheryl, WHO WORKED AT THE CALGARY ZOO WITH MY MUM 20+ YEARS AGO. *head explodes*
3) I've never met
serennig, but she was kind enough to put up some posters of Sampson at her barn in Saskatoon. Last year, I took photos of the nieces of the owner of the GP stable with their horses, one of which they trailered from Saskatoon when they came out for a visit. I just found out that they board at the same stable as
serennig because one of the girls said she saw his poster there! Ahhh, my small world is overlapping between real life and the internet now! Melissa, the girls are Tori and Shelby. Tori has
Luke and I'm not sure if Shelby has her own horse, but she had pictures done with
Pepsi at GP.
Those are just three examples off the top of my head... it seems I can't meet anyone "new" in town anymore without them knowing someone else *I* know!
In summary, I know that you know that I know that you know that I know. :p
