cordelia went to the back door and cried, like the cats do. and, like the cats, when jim opened the door she darted (but not quite as gracefully as that makes it sound) straight out, laughing and heading for the top of the stairs. so we went back outside.

dug up the second, new patch of garden, broke up the huge clods of dirt, pulled out the very well-established weeds, dug out some old wooden stakes and big rocks. the asparagus, mint, catnip, sage and peas are going to go along the back of the fence there, plus whatever else we feel like once we see how much space is left. but first it needs some serious dirt TLC. put in a row of beets and the salad greens.

cordelia re-met (its all about the short-term memory) the neighbour and the neighbours 15-year old dog, neither of whom she was too keen on. the last time she was in contact with a large dog (and it was a truly large dog) it bowled her over without noticing she was there. now she has a slight fear of dogs, but theres not too much to be nervous about when it comes to scooter - he's mostly blind and mostly deaf and just likes to cuddle and nap. our neighbour says "he got really old over the winter, its not really funny but its kinda funny when we take him out for a walk and he walks right into a pole or something - he's doing well though, no serious problems yet."

cordelia sat in the grass and ate a sweet potato cookie, chatted to herself and kept one eye on the dog.

she also tried rice milk today. its a big hit.

tomorrow:
buy some compost and some kind of herbivore poo to buff up the two new patches of garden.
plant the asparagus and its new friends along the fence
rake smooth the rest of the garden, a general tidying-up and prep it for next weeks vegetables.
