Oh, oh, oh, SUCH brilliance. I cannot be eloquent here, this fic is too multi-layered, too deep, too rich. What a wonderful, wonderful backstory this is! And the historical contexts! Mazeltov!

Wow - this was absolutely phenomonal! You've given Aberforth a real personality and made him into something other than the butt of a joke, as he is in canon. Your Albus is wonderfully in character as well - he certainly cares about his brother, but he's also concerned with the bigger picture...

I loved the idea of Aberforth choosing his own distinct path and essentially turning his back on the Wizarding world - it would make sense for him to take such a step back out of the shadow of his more illustrious brother.

I'm so glad I managed to make Aberforth plausible - I became fascinated when I really started thinking about his character, partly because what we have to go on in canon is pretty challenging. What a great story! The dynamics between the brothers was so richly laid out, and I really liked how you wove the whole backstory from their past into the fic. Aberforth seems so tired, so worn down from life, and yet so real in comparison to the ever fabulous Albus. And I felt so sorry for John. The whole discrimination thing was described so vivid and realistic - very true and painful.

Um, in the original version, John was murdered by a mob. But the request was for no character death, and I think forcing myself to work around that made it a better story. In this version, I don't think he'll get much better, unfortunately, but he has mechanisms that allow him to feel safe :/.
