That was a lovely portrayal of Neville's character - and a clever twist of Harry's second conversation with the hat in canon!

Lovely! I really liked Neville, and the hat was very much a character of its own. Especially when ordering Dumbledore around. *g*

I loved this from the first moment of gargoyle confrontation. I loved Neville's respectful term of address "Mr.Hat." I loved the way the hat used Herbology references to talk about bravery, and most of all I loved the idea of friendship between these two rather lonely beings.
The hat's gratitude for being appreciated was especially moving: "It's been a long time since anyone called me their friend."

Oh, Neville. I love the run-down of his disastrous first day :).

he'd sat through enough of them at the parties his grandmother had thrown and he knew how to be patient

I love this detail. And "A hat never lies..." is brilliant! Also, I really like the way Neville's relationship with the hat mirrors Harry's with the mirror of Erised.

Go, Neville! I've always liked that Dumbledore gave him those points. And Neville has certainly risen to the challenge over the years.

My favorite lines: "Thank you, Mr. Longbottom," said the hat's voice in his mind. "It's been a long time since anyone called me their friend."

"Of course you're my friend," thought Neville. "And, well… maybe you could call me Neville?"

The pleased feeling that resulted from the hat's response stayed with Neville all day.
