[Sasaki is just on her first trip to the library. No one has warned her about this little wrinkle, though: after having wandered shelves for some time and finding books about mop selection, sewing, and recipes, she sees someone with a book on... dog training. At least it's a different topic...]

Excuse me, may I ask where you got that book? I can't seem to find anything but books on household maintenance.

Oh, umm, unfortunately the library has different books based on the towns gender and age categories.

Although.... I'd be surprised if they restrict this sort of thing for girls.

[Sasaki stares at his face suspiciously.]

I see. Yes, I'm not interested in dog training, but nevertheless, all I've seen has been related to housework, and I had been wondering if I had simply overlooked some part of this place. That's fascinating, how does that work, exactly? Really, they scan us as we enter and create different books for us? Is it all in the same physical space, or is it some kind of illusion?

[Though she's rambling on, she's staring at him still.]

I....

[He smiles and shakes his head.]

Honestly I have no idea. But a lot of people who are much smarter than me have been investigating this town for years. They might know.

All I can tell you is that the town is very concerned with appearances.

[She doesn't seem to really mind anymore.]

Ah, speaking of appearances. You look rather familiar to me... there's no reason for us to have met before, but are you related to some public figure?

[Wow, he's impressed. Not many people are well studied enough to have any idea what the original Hitler looked like at sixteen. He shakes his head.]

Not exactly. I'm a clone, actually. I come from a school that was created to raise and train clones of famous historical figures.

[Sasaki's brow furrows.]

Ah... that's truly remarkable, genetic clones. I wonder where they got the DNA samples. You must come from some time in the future then as well, or an entirely different world.

Hmm, perhaps I can guess? You seem to be German, or Central European, at any rate. Hmm, I would almost think that-- but I can't seem to think of any good reason, though...

[She smiles apologetically.] Perhaps I shouldn't guess, but, I am thinking of a certain famous Austrian figure, who, in the previous century, sparked a world war. [She pauses.] The Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

......

[That was a kind of unexpected guess. And almost funny. She's.... oddly close, too.]

Umm, no. I'm... Adolf Hitler, actually.

[He still can't introduce himself without a hint of apology in his voice.]

[Sasaki blinks and then nearly grins.]

Really, now? What a fascinating choice of a person to clone! Truthfully, I had wanted to guess this, but it seemed, perhaps, offensive. I tried to gauge your reaction with my strangely-worded sentence, but you were surprisingly hard to read. Then again, I don't truly know what your original version's strengths were, but they must have been considerable. Though, I don't want to sound too congratulatory. So, what name do you go by, then?

Ummm.... we were all named for our originals. So my name actually is Adolf Hitler.

[Sasaki pauses for just a moment.]

Shouldn't you change it...? Indeed, I think almost any other name would be more comfortable.

However, I suppose you've thought about this as well. Perhaps you retain your name because an authority has compelled you to do so? Or maybe it is because you feel that abandoning it would be a cowardly running away from history?

[She's....good. She's starting to remind him of Freud.]

My name is.... something that I have to accept. I can't change what I am.

Re: C) cramschoolgod February 12 2011, 07:45:42 UTC
Well, it's not something you have to accept, don't you think? It's something you've chosen to accept. In this way, you've already changed who you are, Herr Hitler.

Ah, it really puts a different complexion on Nietzsche's idea of infinite recurrence, doesn't it? You are not, after all, living out the same choices again. I doubt your original was taken here before, though of course, your original was a sometime-follower of Nietzsche. Have you the same interests? This would be a good opportunity to collect more information on the nature/nurture question.

Collect....information?

[He is really not sure how to deal with this. He's gotten used to getting one of two reactions. Either 'That's terrible but it's not your fault.' Or 'That is bad. You are bad. Away with you and your Hitlerness.' Either way, no one has ever been interested in pursuing the subject beyond that.]

Well... the school made every effort to teach us everything our originals would have known. But it's not as if they could duplicate the same environment.

[If there's one thing Sasaki is interested in, it's pursuing subjects beyond the point that other people want to.]That's most peculiar. Did they intentionally teach you incorrect or out-of-date knowledge? In biology, for example, your original was from an era when the mechanism of genetic transmission was not yet discovered ( ... )

[Wow... He is a little overwhelmed. No one was ever interested before. And the school always frowned on those kinds of questions.]

Umm... I don't really know how they decided who to clone. I guess the teachers probably knew what they were doing.

[He hopes they did, anyway.]

As for environment... I think it was a pretty normal school, except for the students. I don't know though, since I don't really have much to compare it with.
