work and an idiot patient

Apr 05, 2008 00:15

had an irate patient call today and call me a liar and told me I was stupid. A co-worker said I jumped out of my chair like I was going to go through the phone as I told him I did NOT have to take that from him and that I was NOT a liar and I was NOT stupid. I totally expoloded on him. He told me I needed to call the pharmacy and tell them they were stupid then.

I did call the pharmacy and let them have it too. BUT I did NOT call them stupid.

Boy was I mad. I was shaking mad! If he had been there I may have slapped him.

I marched into the doc's office and let him know I was going to beat the crap out of one of his patients to watch the news at 11:00! Told him what unfolded and he called the patient and told him to either apologize to me or find another doctor. HAH!

The patient did call me and apologize. Said he was upset and he got a little out of hand. A little? Excuse me sir... it wasn't little to me. I am not a liar and I am not stupid! And your tone of voice was way out of line. The hair stood up on the back of my neck. If I had been a cat my back would have been arching and the claws would have been out! HISS... HISS

I won't get over this any time soon. Might just squeeze the blood pressure cuff a little tighter next time he is in. GRRRR

I don't know where people get off thinking they can talk to other people like they do.

I go out of my way to take care of the patients and treat them with dignity and respect even when they are a pain in the ass. But I will NOT tolerate abuse from them like that.

Had something similar happen several years ago when I was returning a call to a patient and didn't identify myself first. Just asked for so and so. I was a female voice... wife and hubby were fighting and the son handed the phone to the mom. She was very hateful.. I was like a deer in headlights because I didn't realize they were fighting... he got on the phone and started yelling at me... saying I should leave whatever is in my life out of my profession. I was stunned. I hadn't said anything to her, and I did identify myself to her saying I was returning his call. Didn't have a clue what I'd done but ask for him. The doc was going to dismiss him as a patient but didn't because I said let it go. But 6 1/2 years later... I still remember this incident everytime he comes in. LOL So guess I didn't let it go myself.

WHEW had to vent. I am still angry.
