Summary: Yuna gets a new guardian.
Damp air closed in around them and made breathing difficult. Light reflected off pale, iridescent pools, casting flickers and shadows along the uneven stone walls. Yuna jumped at the silhouette of a bat and retreated into the safety of the group.
When Waka laughed, she felt foolish. Shoulders slumped, she moved toward Lulu. She was tired from the last sending. Too many people had died. She wasn't sure she had the strength to continue their trek across Spira.
Lulu wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "Don't mind him. He jumps at shadows all the time."
Waka growled a retort, but it vanished into the roar of an underground stream. They rounded the bend into a broad, high-ceilinged chamber. Here the light--generated by a scant covering of underground plants, she thought--was brighter, almost blinding, as it reflected off crystal walls and water alike.
"What is this place?" she whispered, pressing closer to Lulu.
"Monsters!" Auron screamed, slashing at movement Yuna could scarcely see in the glaring light. He pivoted, sword striking a target making a bee line for her.
Lulu insinuated herself between Yuna and the monster. Magic sparks flashed from her fingertips, caught the creature in the chest and flung it backward. The beast yowled as the magic devoured it.
"Stay here," Lulu ordered, shoving her charge into the cleft of a rock.
Yuna raised her staff. "I want to help."
"You're drained. Let us take care of this. We'll be back."
The first fleck of magic across Yuna's hands pulled energy from deep inside her, forcing her to her knees. Lulu was right. She couldn't fight. This was their battle, not hers. It was her duty to live to fight--to send those poor souls unable to find the otherworld--another day.
She ducked into the crevice, her back pressed against the cold, wet rock, her staff clutched to her chest. Light flickered and waned as the battle raged. Rock rumbled; debris rained down around her until she ducked her head and prayed for the safety of those who kept her safe.
The clash of weapons faded. Magic flares died. Screams grew distant until Yuna wasn't sure she could still hear them. She struggled to rise--she had to find the others--but fell back against the rock, weak and spent. The light dimmed to nothing. Her head sagged to her chest.

She woke to a snarl and the lunge of a beast into the rock cleft. Teeth flashed, jaws snapped, and Yuna jabbed at the monster with the business end of her staff. It was too big for her to force out. It strained against the rock that held it at bay, forcing its shoulders through until the stone crumbled.
Reaching for the flicker of magic still left inside her, she prayed for Valefor to intervene on her behalf. In her mind, the casting circle spread out in a flash of magic and imprinted on the cavern floor outside her hiding place. Pain flashed through her chest. Her staff clattered from her hands. She pitched forward, toward the mouth of the beast, unable to maintain her link to the aeon.
A flash of light sliced the beast in half. The carcass jerked backwards and sailed across the chamber. A tall figure stood in its place holding a sword as long as he was tall. White hair trailed to his waist, a sharp contrast to his black leather clothing.
"Who are you?" She should be thanking him. "Where did you come from?"
His eyes bore into her. With his free hand, he reached out to her. "I came when I heard your call."
"My..." It was impossible. He wasn't an aeon. "Thank you. I owe you my life."
That won the hint of a smile. "We should get out of here. You look like you could use some rest."

The others had protested, so much so that she'd left them behind. She had no worries with Sephiroth at her side. Her new guardian was so intense, so focused, that she didn't need to be strong.
