Title: His Girl Kyoko
Author: misura
Rating: PG-13 for implied late-night activities
Warnings: none, really.
Summary: Ren and Sho on the morning after.
A/N: Life got hectic, and posting dates were missed - this one's for June 11th. Not sure where or even if this fits in canon; I wrote it after reading volume ten or so.

Sho Fuwa had never lost to a woman (a girl, really) in his life - in part, of course, because he was a gentleman, and as a gentleman, he knew it wasn't gentlemanlike at all to compete with a woman, let alone some girl he'd known for his whole life.

Last night had definitely been a mistake.

It hadn't been his fault that it had happened, of course; he'd just been ... he simply hadn't ... well, whatever had happened had clearly been Kyoko's fault. Naturally. Everything that went wrong in his life (well, a lot of it, surely) was Kyoko's fault.

She'd always been weak and powerless, and she still was weak and powerless. There was no way someone like Kyoko could ever be a threat to someone like him.

If he felt slightly uneasy when thinking about last night, it was just because he knew Shoko wa going to nag him about it (women!). As it was any of her business what he did and who he did it with.

He was a man after all, not some boy who needed looking after. He'd known what he'd been doing last night just fine - and he'd done it well, too, if he did say so himself.

"Did you and Miss Mogami spend a pleasant evening together yesterday?"

Ren Tsuruga? What's he doing here? Did he just read my mind? Is that why he's smiling?

"Yes, we did!" Wait ... "I mean, no, we didn't." As if I could ever enjoy myself in the company of someone so boring and plain-looking. "I mean, what business of yours is it?"

Tsuruga blinked, his smile turning puzzled for a few seconds. "We work for the same agency." His tone implied: surely, you knew this, adding, almost as an afterthought: you fool.

"I knew that." He simply hadn't considered it any reason for Tsuruga's impertinent question. He certainly didn't go around asking about women signed up at his agency. Could it be that he's jealous? The notion was ridiculous; Tsuruga might not be as good-looking as he was, but he wasn't a nobody. He was a worthy opponent. A man. And he'll be an old man before I am.

Tsuruga nodded once, his expression a mask of pleasantness and politeness.

"I've known Kyoko since we were kids." Did you hear how I just called her by her first name? That's how familiar she and I are! "We grew up together."

"She must know some interesting stories about you, then."

"N-not at all!" She'd been there all the time. Small wonder he'd grown sick and tired of her by the time he'd been ready to move to Tokyo. She ought to have been grateful he hadn't left her behind entirely. She was probably packing her bags right now.

Tsuruga smiled. I don't believe you, his smile said.

"Just boring stuff. You know, what kind of pudding I like, that sort of thing."

Liar, Tsuruga's smile said. Liar, liar, liar. No wonder people think I'm better-looking than you are. You can't even tell a convincing lie. What a loser you are, Sho Fuwa.

"Shut up!" Sho yelled.

Tsuruga stepped back. Hah. See? He's afraid of me.

"What are you doing here, anyway?" It wouldn't do to antagonize Tsuruga too much. Shoko would probably scold him.

"Oh, we're going to record a commercial for a new drama. Perhaps you've heard of it already."

"Not really." Why would I have heard of it already? Because you're famous? Well, you're not as famous as I'm going to be. Why would I pay any attention to what you're doing?

"Ah."

I guess he's been paying attention to what I've been doing, though. Who'd have thought? Well, of course he's right to consider me a threat. "Are you and Kyoko ... involved in some way?"

Tsuruga stopped smiling for the first time in their conversation.

"I should like to think that Miss Mogami and I are friends," he said.

Friends? Friends? What kind of answer is that? Of the many ways Sho might have thought of his and Kyoko's relationship, 'friends' had been one he'd last used a very long time ago, if ever. He'd been Kyoko's idol, the reason for her existence, the center of her world - he'd led and she'd followed, because that was the way it worked. Until it didn't, anymore.

They hadn't been 'friends' last night. Last night had just been Kyoko, trying to prove to him that she was his rival, and failing. Kyoko wasn't any kind of rival of his - not in public, and not in private.

"And you?" Tsuruga asked. He was smiling again.

"I ... " She hadn't bested him. She hadn't. "We're ... "

"Still friends?" Sho really hated Tsuruga's smile. "You must be glad of that."

He'd probably never see her again. And good riddance. What could a guy like me possibly want with a girl like her?

"We're not friends. She's just some crazy girl from my hometown who wants to get revenge on me for dumping her." Yes! I dumped her! I didn't want her! I want nothing to do with her! I'm cool! I'm cooler than you are, Tsuruga!

"I see," Tsuruga said.

"Last night was just ... " I wanted to taunt her. "I was stupid." I didn't want to lose.

"Yes," Tsuruga said.

Sho glared at him. He should have disagreed. That's what Kyoko would have done, before.

"But then, you're hardly the only one. Isn't everyone foolish, from time to time?"

He's sorry he called me stupid. He knows he shouldn't insult me. "I guess so." See, Kyoko? Even Tsuruga respects me!

"I'd better go." Tsuruga rose. "Nice talking to you, Fuwa."

Didn't he say he was here for work? Then why's he headed for the exit? Maybe he needs to go meet someone outside or something ... there, some guy just came in. Probably his manager.

"Ren, where are you ... ?"

Sho sneezed. Hah, someone's - Twice. I wonder what he just said to his manager.
