Prompt: November 18: Final Fantasy IX, Steiner/Beatrix: dancing - "You're treading on my toes, Captain."
It was hardly a secret that there was no love between the new King and the stalwart captain of the Pluto Knights. They had a torrid history of not getting along, and it wasn’t as though everybody didn’t already know it. Captain Adelbert Steiner had determinedly dedicated his life to protecting the new Queen, had gone to the darkest parts of the world to do so, and was not about to stop simply because what promised to be the greatest adventure of his life was now over. He had grown to at least respect the new King-the man his Queen had chosen to marry-and the King returned that at least in part for his devotion.
General Beatrix, however, had trouble understanding the strange relationship Steiner shared with the King. She respected the man for his strength and for his love for Queen Garnet, and dedicated all her energy to the protection of the King and Queen. It wasn’t that Steiner didn’t do the same, just with a much different attitude than Beatrix maintained. She respected and cared for the King and Queen, no matter who they were or where they had come from originally.
She stared up at Steiner with a fierce expression as he carelessly whirled her around the area set aside for dancing at the King’s birthday and stumbled a bit over her slight form. “Steiner,” She told him tightly. “I’m sure your dancing partner would appreciate it if you focused a bit on what you are doing.”
He looked down at her, as if surprised to see she was there. “I… My apologies.” He murmured, looking back over the dance floor to where the King was laughing happily with the Queen.
“They are happy. I am not,” She told him, pulling her hand off his shoulder to turn his chin back toward her and glaring up at him. “You are not paying attention to your enormous feet, Captain.”
He shifted a bit and met her intense gaze. “Again, my most sincere apologies, General.” He started to look away again, but her hand snapped up and seized his chin.
“Good Lord, man,” She sighed. “They’re fine. The King is not going to try anything untoward with the Queen in the middle of his birthday celebration and,” She rolled her eyes and pressed a finger to his lips as he opened his mouth to protest. “And even if he did, I certainly doubt anyone would mind, seeing as it’s his wife. Now, if you would please pay attention to the way you dance. Though I would certainly appreciate the time off work, I shouldn’t like to do so at the expense of my toes.”
Steiner gave a non-commital grunt before forcing his attention back onto the woman with whom he was dancing. “Right.” He mumbled after Beatrix stared him down for another moment and he turned his attention fully to her.
Still, at the next turn of the music, Beatrix cringed as his foot landed on hers again. Perhaps it was a matter of just getting on with it.
