There was, Leonardo realized abruptly, blue eyes flying open and gazing up in vague concern at April’s ceiling, a distinct lack of thumps, bumps, cursing, and general noise and had been for some time. Across the room from him, April’s newspaper rustled as she lowered it. They shared a long look and then wordlessly April set aside her paper and Leo rose gracefully to his feet, meditation and relaxation for the moment forgotten. Silence from the roof usually meant trouble, trouble that seemingly inevitably they would have to resolve or clean up.

Going to the open window, Leo looked out over the streets of New York, the night’s shadows hiding untold dramas, the unseen crimes he had sworn to end. They were probably out there, on the rooftops or down in the alleys, giving as good as they got and more. And then they’d come back, bruises and scrapes to be tended and smug satisfaction that could never quite be beaten out of them, that a ninja is silent, swift, and careful. A siren wailed some twenty blocks north and then he heard it, a low voice above his head.

“No way, dude. Mine’s definitely bigger.”

April could see the way Leo’s eyes widened and she opened her mouth to ask but he silenced her with a finger to his beak. She raised an eyebrow at him and he pointed to her roof and then beckoned her over with a crook of his finger. April joined him at the window, cocking her head as she listened.

“How can you say that? You gone blind or something? Mine’s bigger.”

A slow, sly grin spread across April’s face and she poked Leo conspiratorially, pointed at the iron stairs bolted to the outside of her building. Out and up they went as the familiar voices continued to assert individual size superiority until two faces, a feminine one and a green one wearing a blue bandanna, could just be seen peeping over the edge of the roof.

“Seriously, Raph.” Casey, surrounded by a litter of sports equipment, held up his trusty hockey stick. “This is like, FOUR, of yours. Just admit it. Mine’s - all of mine are - bigger.”

“Fine,” Raphael grudgingly conceded, twirling one of his sais. The slender steel flashed in the faint ambient glow of the city at night and the hockey stick went flying out of Casey’s hand to clatter on the roof. “But it’s how you use it that really counts.”

Another look was exchanged and then the obscurely disappointed faces of Leo and April sank back below the roofline as they slunk down the stairs and went back to their rather less interesting activities of meditation and reading. Back on the roof, Raph and Casey held their tableau, the turtle staring determinedly over the man’s shoulder at a particularly shiny chrome hubcap angled just so on the balcony across the street. As soon as Leonardo and April had resumed their seats, Raphael collapsed forward, his weight sending Casey staggering as he held on to the chuckling turtle.

“Oh man, you shoulda SEEN the looks on their faces. Never thought I’d see the day. Ol’ Fearless is a perv after all. And we had’em completely fooled.”

Casey grinned, reached up to scrub his knuckles across the smoothness of Raph’s head. “Next time, I get to watch.”

“Yeah, yeah. We’ll see about that.” Raphael caught his breath and found his balance, sliding one leg between Casey’s. “Anyway, I hate ta admit it, but Mikey was right. A good laugh CAN,” and he leaned up to whisper in Casey’s ear, sai falling forgotten to the roof as his hand closed around something currently a bit more dangerous, “work wonders. But Casey, mine’s still bigger.”
