Her hands were steady as she looped the cloth together mechanically, tightening her knot with a quick flick after quickly feeling out precisely where everything was.

“Remind me why I’m doing this, Toph.” His hands reached up to move the blindfold, only to be swatted back.

“You said you wanted to know what it was like.” She adjusted it one last time before stepping back and allowing him a moment to get used to the feeling. “Stop touching it, Sokka.”

He opened his mouth to protest, but even without his sight he knew she was shooting him the dirtiest glare she could. He mumbled something neutrally before leaning back against the pillow. “Now what?”

“Wait.” She told him as she lay down next to him on the ground, resting her head next to his. He fumbled for her hand, and she slipped her fingers into his without a word.

“What are we doing, Toph?”

She elbowed him and he squeaked in protest. “Shut up and listen.”

He didn’t hear anything at first; didn’t feel anything but the fading pain in his side. Just when he was sure Toph was playing a joke on him, he realized how loud everything was. The crickets creaked out their night melody, he could almost feel the faint vibrations of something trudging through the nearby forest; aware of its approach before he heard the thundering echo of whatever it was. He listened, and felt, and finally understood the world Toph knew.

When he squeezed her hand and told her so, she squeezed back and told him he didn’t understand anything yet.
