Title: Ashes and Sulfur
Author: Laylah
Rating: PG?
Wordcount: 300
Summary: Something has brought him to this city. Yuber seeks it out.

He parts his lips and tastes the air, uncertain at first what brought him here. The night in this -- he pauses -- not countryside, but park, is peaceful, but peace has never drawn him to a world unless it's fragile. The breeze brings him the scent of ashes and sulfur, the sharp stink of fresh death and the subtle rot of old power. Yuber smiles.

Outside the park where he materialized, the city is in full riot, buildings on fire, streets buckling with explosions, soldiers running toward more trouble. This he knows well. Yuber carves a path through the city, cutting down mortals in his wake, drenching his blades in blood. They make it too easy. there must be something else.

The one who called Yuber here is in the eye of the storm, just as he should be, hot fire-winds whipping at his scarlet coat, his laughter showing the bright glint of his fangs. He's one of the most spectacular walking dead that Yuber's ever seen, a cascade of powerful magics woven through his flesh -- and one thread-fine brilliant gold snare wrapped around him, one spell to bind him to a mortal house.

Yuber steps out onto the cracked pavement, and meets the vampire's gaze with both eyes.

"Another challenger?" the vampire asks. He sounds pleased. "You'd better have the skills to make this interesting."

"Now, now," Yuber says. He watches the way the shadows move around the vampire, coming at his call, seething around his feet hungrily. The binding spell is loose, not a tight leash at all. "A good dog attacks only on command."

The vampire laughs, shadows massing around him thick and sinuous as serpents. "I've always been a very bad dog."

Just before the writhing shadows engulf him, Yuber thinks, this battle is going to be wonderful.
