"On Sunday mornings Sharon crawls into bed with us, just for the warmth."
Rose and Cybil are huddled together in the back of a schoolroom, waiting for the nightmare to continue. She rests her head on Cybil's chest as she continues.
"Then I make scrambled eggs and we read the Sunday comics."
Rose's shirt is splattered with the blood of a nameless something, and Cybil's face is bruised and smeared with dirt.
"Sharon likes card games. I had to argue with Chris not to teach her to play poker."
At that point Rose buries her face in Cybil's neck and makes a sound like a sob. Cybil lifts her chin and looks into her eyes. "Shh... We'll find her; we'll make it through. We're in this together."
Rose's arm tightens around Cybil's waist. "What do you like about living here? In this part of West Virginia?" she asks.
"That's gotta be the country," says Cybil. "I can step outside and I'm practically in the woods. Green everywhere, and that pine smell, and birds. You should see it, Rose... You will see it." She strokes Rose's hair.
After a pause Cybil goes on. "My friends and me, we all go hiking. Some of them make a big deal, go out for days, weeks. The Appalachian Trail and all that. I just go out around here mostly. But I love the old forest, where the trees have been here so long."
"I'll never see green again, or another Sunday morning," says Rose. She tries to rise from the floor and Cybil puts one leg over hers to hold her down, and then hugs her tightly. "Just sit for a while, Rose. I can't face any more of what's out there right now and neither can you."
Rose lets her leg entwine with Cybil's and relaxes against her again.
"Tell me again about the trees..."
