His mechanical body was torn apart, violently and quickly. The red mist screamed, all alone. Only the four of them were there to listen. The darkness came, and he, separated from the others, could no longer feel anything at all.
The darkness then parted as quickly as it had come, revealing a gray, dry world. He floated above, and he could see nothing but barren fields. Ten years into the future, and this was what the world looked like. He had failed the prophecy, and no amount of warning could have prepared him for the consequences of their failure.
And then he saw it: a small tree with red leaves, literally in the middle of nowhere. White birds were flying toward it, many more than he could count, and yet none seemed to leave the tree once they reached it. It was a tiny tree, seemingly incapable of holding such a large number.
"A tree where the doves go to die," said a female voice from somewhere nearby. "It is the only sanctuary left in this world."
Ness closed his eyes. "Can you pray for them, Paula?"
"I can't pray in a world where people have abandoned peace."
"So we really were all alone then." Ness reached for Paula, and they both flew toward the red tree, both of them insignificant white doves.
