End of All Endings
It was like a crime scene photo, Mary bent into the car’s trunk like a discarded thing, and the crime was his. She felt so light in his arms when he picked her up. Had the disease taken so much of her, or had she lost more than her breath when she died? He brushed a kiss over her cold forehead as he awkwardly placed her in the passenger seat. James fastened the seat belt, too numb for a sense of irony now.
On their first date he had picked her up in this same car, which had been new then. She had sat right there in that seat, smiling at him. He had been nervous, even at his age, and hadn’t been sure what he was supposed to say and do. In a way, he still wasn’t certain what Mary Shepherd had ever wanted with him.
But at the end of the night he had kissed her, and she had put her arms around his neck and kissed him back. And he had thought he knew what it all meant after all - affection, tenderness, needing this person to be in this place.
Yet this was what it had all come down to, Mary’s corpse slumped in the seat and James crying as if he could somehow undo what he had done. He put a hand on her head for a moment and said “I’m sorry,” one more meaningless time.
If anyone ever found this car, they probably would be able to figure out how she had really died, but who would come here, and what did that matter now?
As James started the car, he wondered if anyone would do what he had done, if they were pushed far enough. But he didn’t really believe it. He had watched his own father tend his mother when she was ill.
The car slipped into the lake, and James braced himself not to struggle as the water began to pour in. Wherever he went, he might not see Mary, just as the town had warned him. But then maybe he wouldn’t be looking at her dead face, reminding him that he was a monster.
