Kenren stood before Goujun. He resisted the urge to shake his head in disbelief.
“Yes sir.” He gave a clipped bow of the head and a quick salute. He spun on his heels and marched out that austere office as fast as he could without looking like he was hurrying.

He barged into Tenpou’s library.
“So nice of you to knock,” Tenpou sat back in his seat, and tapped the ash off the end of the cigarette he was just finishing.
Without stopping to answer the Field Marshal, Kenren went up to Tenpou, brusquely twisted the cigarette from his fingers and crushed it into the frog ashtray. With surprising gentleness helped the other officer out of his chair.
“Wh … what’s the meaning of this?” queried a puzzled Tenpou.
“I can’t believe you.” Kenren chided him, “You’re not even changed yet.”
“Well I was contemplating writing the report first before I was rudely interrupted.” Tenpou was a little dizzy now, “Are you going to tell me what all this about? … Or will I have to guess?”
“Well,” Kenren gave a dramatic pause, “first of all I do not like to be hauled up in summons to the almighty Dragon King.”
“Oh,” was all Tenpou could manage … under the circumstances.
“Secondly, you should call for me as soon as you get back from these damn missions.” Kenren stopped long enough to glare at Tenpou “If, for nothing else but to explain why you did not ask me along with you.” The General manoeuvred Tenpou to his bathroom.
“I had to have our esteemed boss, tell me you were back from a mission, he was certain I was on, to tell me that,” Kenren paused to breathe, “You have a cold! … and now, I find you’re burning up even.”
Kenren sat the hapless Tenpou on the edge of the bath and propped him up carefully against the wall. He started to run the water, making sure that the water was warm enough but not too hot. He then returned his attention to Tenpou who by now developed a glazed look. He slowly unbuttoned the military greatcoat, gently slipping his friend’s arms out of them. He pushed the coat off the shoulders and as it dropped to the floor, Kenren kicked it aside. He would get a batsman to clean up later. He pulled on the belt buckle, hesitated a moment and then cleared his mind to the task.
“My, aren’t we being a little forward?” Tenpou flopped his arms round Kenren.
“I’m just trying to get you changed and into bed.” Kenren regretted those words instantly. He could feel his ears go as hot as Tenpou.
“Mm … yes that’s what it looks like to me,” Tenpou laughed a little. “General … are you blushing?”
“No, uh it’s just uh - a little warm in here.” Kenren moved Tenpou’s arms to turn off the tap. He had no choice but to unceremoniously dump the other Kami into the bath, as gently as he could. Still the water splashed over the side of the bath a little. The little soak would at least get the grime off.
“Oi - hey, Tenpou,” he spoke over his shoulder, “don’t drown ok? I’m just going to get a towel.”

In fifteen minutes, he had Tenpou tucked in bed in loose fit pyjamas and left him resting to go clean himself up a little. In the bathroom he splashed some cool water on his face, ran his fingers through his hair, then wiped at his face and neck. He left the towel resting on his shoulder and went back to Tenpou. His friend seemed to be asleep so as quietly as he could he sat on the edge of the bed.
“Hey!”
“Oh sorry,” he whispered, “didn’t mean to wake you.”
“No it’s fine.”
“Do you need anything?”
“No, no thanks. Thank you for everything.”
“So you were called up on my account?”
“Yeah.”
“So he does care.”
“…” Kenren just raised his eyebrows in silence at the half-asleep Kami.
“Stay awhile, please.”
“Umm … yeah sure.”
Kenren shifted nearer the headboard. He fluffed up the spare pillow that Tenpou was not using and rested into it. He sat there awhile for some minutes and then decided that he may as well get a little more comfortable. He got up to dim the lights and take his boots off. He sat back down on his pillow, stretched his legs and rested them on the bed. Sitting up like this was not too uncomfortable.
He looked down at Tenpou. He was asleep now. He actually looked quite peaceful and childlike. The general chuckled into the dark. Now that was not how anyone would ever describe the marshal as. As it was, it did not matter that he did not sleep much that night. He simply watched Tenpou breathe.
