The realisation that he could not have asked for more than was given did not dampen the loss any, but it helped.

Well, it's no consolation to some of us, but I suppose dragons are pragmatic that way.

And Dr. Johnson got it in one.

It's that 'To think that two and two are four/ And neither five nor three' thing. I always ask for more than I'm given, and feel ill-used when I don't get it. Even if I don't know what it was I wanted in the first place, I know very well that I don't have it.

None of which, natch, is Goujun's thing at all.

It almost hurts to watch him struggling to figure out what he feels, especially when he's so stoic and practical about it despite how deeply the loss cuts him.  T_T

Wonderfully written - I like the echo of his sitting in the chair as relaxed as he'll ever be to sort of bookend the realizaton in between.
