*~*~*

Seiryuu shimmered into Seimei’s room to kneel in a corner while his master slept. Through the years, he had watched the onmyouji grow older; his long brown hair slowly fading to gray and a body that was once spry and youthful, burdened with the ages and a face that mapped the trials and travails of being one of the most powerful onmyouji in the country.

He rocked to sit, keeping his leg pulled up, and he rested his chin on his bent knee.

“Why the face, Seiryuu?” Seimei’s voice cracked from his futon. He turned over to face the shikigami and lifted to an elbow. His grayed hair slipped over his shoulder and Seiryuu felt an aching in his fingers to reach out and push it away again.

He resisted, opting instead to “hmpf” softly and find something far more interesting in the direction that was not looking at Seimei.

“Ah, you’re not still angry with my decision about Masahiro, are you?” Seimei sat up and pulled a robe around his shoulders. With aching slowness, he rose to his feet and padded softly to the door, sliding it open to step out onto the engawa.

Regardless of Seiryuu’s petulant mood, he still did not want Seimei far from him and followed; although he remained out of reach.

“The fireflies are beautiful tonight, wouldn’t you say?” He tucked his hands into his sleeves and sighed, the sound light as a butterfly’s touch.

“Their lives are far too short to fully enjoy their beauty, Seimei,” he replied and winced when he realized what he’d given away.

Seimei laughed. “Then that’s the time to take pleasure in it most; precisely because their time is so limited.” He turned to face Seiryuu. “But there are those who still have much time left to them.”

He did not want to have this conversation yet there was no stopping it now, it had already been broached. “I’ve told you, Seimei, you are the only one I acknowledge.” Stepping forward, he approached Seimei, a brash, bold move, until their shoulders almost touched. “And when you are gone, I will return from where I came.”

“So fierce,” Seimei chided lightly and he nudged Seiryuu with his elbow. “There are things even I can not stop, Seiryuu. It is simply a cycle and any attempt to cheat it can only end in misery.”

Seiryuu turned a fierce expression on Seimei. “I can not accept that.” His chest tightened and Seiryuu clenched his teeth. While he would, reluctantly, admit that Seimei’s grandson might have some potential, it was a situation that simply was untenable to consider.

Yet every day, Seimei was older and the time passing was passing at a faster rate than when he was younger.

Without realizing it, he reached out to lift the gray hair, letting the long locks slip along his fingers. He pulled it to his lips and before letting it spill away. “Even in death, I will be yours,” Seiryuu said quietly.

Seimei laughed again and tapped Seiryuu on the arm. “That sounds positively gruesome.”

“This is not a joke, Seimei!” Fierce passion seized him and he felt the floor rumble beneath his feet. It subsided quickly and Seiryuu took a step back. Hurting Seimei now in his own arrogant, childish lashing out was unacceptable. He was able to exercise control, unlike the traitor, Touda, who hovered so close to Seimei’s foolish grandson.

His nose wrinkled in disapproval.

“Look, Seiryuu. Watch how the fireflies dance in the evening air. Their only desire is to shine in the night. No thoughts for tomorrow, not plagued by morbid thoughts of their own impending death.” The air around Seimei shimmered and when the light subsided, a younger version of Seimei stood before Seiryuu. The lines of age were gone, leaving Seimei looking fresh and new and clean as the day when Seiryuu was first summoned by the onmyouji.

Seimei lifted his hand beneath his now dark hair and lifted it to push it off his shoulder. “Death is just a transition. The end is simply an illusion that separates this world from the next. I will not fear my own death.”

“Then I will fear it for you,” Seiryuu’s voice rose.

“What is it you truly are fearful of, Seiryuu? Surely you aren’t afraid of being bound to Masahiro?”

“Yes.” A lie. And one Seimei saw through immediately. An elegant eyebrow lifted in censure. “No,” Seiryuu acquiesced.

Satisfied, Seimei nodded. He allowed the silence to continue, the energy poignant and focused, obviously waiting for an answer from Seiryuu.

“I…” Seiryuu let out a deep breath, “do not wish you to leave me behind.”

“Well,” Seimei said thoughtfully. He tapped at his chin and took a step into Seiryuu until their bodies gently brushed. Seimei’s body warmed Seiryuu and he slowly lifted an arm to wrap around the trim waist. “I haven’t died yet, Seiryuu. I think I have some time before I do. Why not stop trying to rush me to my grave and stay with me tonight.”

He turned in the circle of Seiryuu’s arms and looked out over the garden. “Let’s enjoy the dance while we are able.”

Seiryuu pulled Seimei close against him and buried his face in the soft, dark, hair to nuzzle at Seimei’s neck. Death felt too close for Seiryuu to be comfortable but he would do as Seimei asked.

To do otherwise was unthinkable.

He rested his cheek against Seimei’s and watched the fireflies blinking lazily as they floated by.
