crimsoncookie for beta reading. I had a handful of ideas for this fic, but only one that I felt truly fit the prompt. I went with that in the hopes that I'd be giving the prompter 'everything you ever'. ;)

There is something dreamlike to the conclusion of a journey, every homecoming upon the Redwings' flagship as he approaches Baron. As he sees the towers gleaming tall, unassailable ivory upon a green horizon. As they grow close and the townspeople take up the call.
The Redwings! The Redwings have returned! The Redwings!
He returns to his king to offer with pride, reports of monsters slain and treasure won for the glory of Baron.
He warms himself in that pride until he takes up the dark sword, and the exultation turns to fear. The reports turn to people slain and treasures stolen.
The Redwings. Get inside! The Redwings have returned! The Redwings...
The dreams become nightmares. A stranger casts gleaming eyes from behind the face of his liege. He meets Kain's gaze and merely a glance reflects the weight of Cecil's shame. Kain understands orders. He feels their gravity and carries them as he carries his spear; with a soldier's humility, never taking the weight for granted.
When he can bear to look Rosa in the face, he feels the tip of a knife. Her anguish is a dagger that pierces his heart. She is a healer who understands what happens upon a battlefield. She bears his deeds and the emotions that drive them with the patience of her love, and a prayer for his safe return.
The Redwings. Captain Cecil has returned. Ring the bell!
He can yet remember the days when he hungered for the sight of them. He can see them in moments past, Rosa waits within the mage's workshop or at the central battlement, trailing an iridescent scarf that can be seen from the air. Kain stands the courtyard, drilling his Dragoons or perched upon the highest tower, raising his lance in salute.
The Captain has returned. Get inside! The Redwings have returned.
They wait still. Cecil's unworthiness eats at him, coiling like a worm in his stomach. Kain cuffs him upon the shoulder, leading him off for a drink in the tavern. Rosa smiles, extending hands that glow with power to clasp his hands and check him for injuries.
Until it all goes wrong.
Until they steal away like thieves, thinking never to return.
Until he loses Kain. Until he loses Rosa to Kain, and thinks them both gone forever. Until he creeps into Baron through the waterways.
They are not here.
Each moment he does not spend battling the agents of Golbez or fearing for the lives of his companions, he looks for them.
But they are not here.
Captain Cecil has returned- he has attained the sword of Light. He is a Paladin! A Paladin-
Now, now they travel as one. They escape the tower of Zot. They discover a way into the Underworld, and out again. Even as they face the Giant of Babel and Golbez has stolen Kain from him again, he has faith. They will win him back. They will find Kain and break the monstrous compulsion that has turned him from his friends. They will.
They do.
They travel into the depths of the Moon and face what they find there... and journey home again.
The Blue World looks so small from the belly of the whale. Then it grows wider, and wider, and becomes the land, instead of the sky. He identifies Mt. Hobbs, Mt. Ordeals, and knows the coast near the ruined castle of Eblan. He finds the coast of Damcyan, and the chocobo forest near Baron.
Rosa stands at his left hand, and twines her fingers with his.
Kain stands at his right, silent, troubled, but his once more.
Then Kain says he is leaving.
Cecil! Cecil has returned. He has defeated Golbez once and for all! Ring the bell! Cecil has returned- Cecil-
Rosa walks at his side. In the place, she says, she will be from this day forward.
(Excepting her continued studies, the occasional bath, and the one and one-half days spent in seclusion with half a dozen seamstresses as she is fitted for her bridal gown. In which, she is stunning.)
She stands at his side. Two thrones within the grand hall of Baron and it feels like a dream yet.
They have won. All the battles are fought. All the villains are bested... or redeemed. All their friends are gathered to share this victory.
Edge, who is not acting properly unless he flouts royal dignity. King Giott and Princess Luca, who yet give shade to their eyes, unused to the sunlight and the bright midday sky. Yang, who gives the regards (and a fry pan) of his wife, now Queen of Fabul. Palom, who is determined to thumb his nose at good manners until his sister, Porom, who clubs him over the head for doing so. The Elder of Mysidia, who comes more to wish the new rulers of Baron prosperity than to chaperone the children. Edward, who Rosa fears will never be without his melancholy... but walks with strength, and the determination to restore his kingdom. Rydia, who is very well aware that Edge is doing a miserable job at attempting to ignore her.
Cid, of course Cid, and who better to set a crown upon his head than one who has given Baron her wings? Among their royal guard; the warriors who have served with Cecil and now pledge to serve him, the mages who have been Rosa's teachers and fellow students.
All of their friends are here, save one.
He is looking, even knowing that Kain is not here. Rosa is at his side, her hand is strong and warm and real within his. This moment is not a dream. It is real. But it is not complete.
Rosa squeezes his hand.
"I miss him, too."
