“I always knew humanity would survive, I’ve never met anything more stubborn,” Abel says as they trek away from the latest small and battered but still thriving human settlement they had been seeking shelter and supplies from. Tres has every single one of Abel’s smiles stored in his memory bank (as well as many of his other facial expressions) and it is something strange beyond logical calculation that tells him that Abel’s smile after he speaks is genuine, indicative of a deeper emotion rather than his usual look he gives to try and put those they encounter at ease.
These strange, illogical ideas have been occurring to him more and more often in the century since his emotional restrictor finally broke and he made the decision that perhaps he could try and do what Caterina asked him so long ago, (it still makes something deep within him ache to think of her) and live as a human. According to Abel, he’s “doing pretty well with the whole living as a human thing” and he’s starting to lose the monotone, though he still finds it difficult to remember to not reply with “affirmative” or “negative”. Abel who has kept him going and stayed by his side for all this time when otherwise he would have let himself just shut down by Caterina’s side when she died or cut away all the thinking parts of himself and truly become a machine under someone else’s direction.
Millennia on, they are strangers without purpose wherever they go in this world, and there is a kind loneliness in that. However, they still have each other, and company is the one thing that can drive absolute loneliness away.
