Summary: Schenkopp is intrigued by an incongruous historian-admiral.

Yang Wen-li. Everyone knew that name, Alliance and Empire both. Schenkopp had hardly expected to garner his attention, but that day when he'd started a brawl in the cafeteria to stop a group of creeps from harassing a woman, Yang had noticed him. Then he'd found his Rosen Ritter attached to Yang's Second Fleet, and Yang in his corner, arguing his trustworthiness.

Yang intrigued him. His relaxed manner was completely opposite Schenkopp's imperial training, full of discipline and Ordnung, yet his troops obeyed every order. It didn't make sense, that this historian who didn't even want to be in the Fleet garnered so much respect from his associates and instilled so much fear in the people who wanted the war to continue indefinitely.

Yet Schenkopp was caught in the orbit of this incongruous scholar-admiral who liked to sit on his desk and give orders. When Yang agreed to his infiltration scheme, he'd felt a flash of pride, that this man believed in him. He wanted to do everything he could to prove to him that his trust was not misplaced.

That was the sort of loyalty Yang inspired in his troops. Except, for Schenkopp, it wasn't simple loyalty, but an odd mixture of admiration and lust.

It was a shameful thought, one he could never admit to. Not to his comrades, and definitely not to Yang. There was no reason for him to be ashamed, but if he cast that shame aside and acted on his baser instincts, the consequences could be disastrous. He could lose Yang's trust, be sent to a different Fleet.

Schenkopp laughed at himself. There was always the possibility that Yang felt the same way toward him, but refrained because of fraternization regs. That was too optimistic, he thought. He'd continue to watch from orbit, and hope beyond hope that Yang would pull him closer.

logh, akiko
