I went out for dinner last night, as I was wanting something horrible for me --I ended up eating some cheesy bread and spaghetti with roasted garlic, butter sauce mizithra cheese and baby scallops. YUMMY!
And The waitress we had...at first I thought she must be just kinda sub par (not a surprise as she was working a monday evening, not a huge dinner out night and there was only 1 other table at the place)
So I started my tip count down--a small doc for missing the no ice on both my and my partners drinks. Another one for messing up his salad dressing type and not putting mine on the side. Neither big enough for us to send anything back or complain but big enough to make a mental note if the trend continues...Then a BIG one for forgetting our cheesy bread--when the entrees came and ( she gave them both to the wrong person) it hadn't she just ran off.
When she came back with it she claimed back up though, offering not only the apology for forgetting it but also saying it was her fault so it was comped. The apology/admittance would have been enough to forgive forgetting it, everyone is human, but comping it brought her back up to the full tip. I appreciated that a lot.
As we were enjoying the VERY yummy cheesy bread we heard her talking to the cook in the back and commenting that she was frustrated because she was so forgetful today, and he offered her some pie on break. When the bill came, so did another apology for the forgetfulness, and an unprompted 10% "favored customer" discount.
She ended up with a 25% tip on the noted bill, as I tipped her 15...on the base amount and the cheesy bread.
By saying I'm sorry she won me over, and just for that she would have still gotten the full amount but by trying to make it up to us she ended up with a very fat tip.
Next time I go back I'll see if she's working because that quality made her my favorite bad waitress ever. Cause if shes that good on a bad day, I want to see her on a good one :)
