Cable had not been absent these past few weeks, though it might have seemed that way. He had been on-island, listening to all the radio broadcasts, debriefing Zoe about what she knew, and poking around the machinery held within the island, hoping for a solution ( Read more... )

"I like Iceland!" Jan wailed. Mind, she'd never been there, but there had been a lot of commercials on lately and, well. "She's so stupid."

Nate sighed and looked up. "Wade. I need to talk to you."

"About the looming threat of death or the dishes in the sink?" Same level of 'we need to talk' there.

"The former," Nate said, standing back up straight.

"Is this a 'We're going on vacation... through time' thing? Because I always wanted to punch a hippie at Woodstock," Wade replied, squinting at him. He wasn't due to die and come back until Jan was at least 17.

Nate shook his head, and cast a glance down at Jan, who was mostly minding the television... right now.

"I saw the news this morning," he said. "This thing is here, and at the rate it's moving, we might not be here tomorrow."

"There are measures we can take," Nate replied. "Machines underneath the island that can buy us some time - the only catch is, they're damaged. The power output is too limited to shield the island."

"I need to go in and fix it," Nate said, "Which means accessing my telekinesis - which means I might be a little... out of the game... for a while."

Wade gave him a look. One that might have been funny, but there was a mask in the way, so it was hard to tell. "If you get yourself killed and leave me to raise a kid all on my mentally unstable own, I will be so pissed off."

"The plan would be to avoid that," Nate agreed.

Jan had climbed up on the sofa and was smacking her fists into it, making baleful little faces.

"Until this is over, don't let her out of your sight."

"Hunt you down from beyond the veil and stuff," he added, picking Jan up and putting her over his shoulder. Because he was that parent.

"I WANT ICELAND," Jan bellowed. "NO. NO. NO."

Nate's face was decidedly deadpan, for all the record. "I'll keep that in mind," he promised. "Am I going to get a lecture on cliches if I kiss you goodbye...?"

He was thinking yes. Which is why he said it.

Shush, letting Wade get his shots in at a time like this had its value.

"We had the talk about this," Wade reminded him firmly. Even as Jan wriggled and tried to escape in order to throw one hell of a tantrum. "If you say any of that crap, I will punch the glow right out of your eye."
