Gateway Arts

Seeing art is always great.

Yesterday, Art Works, a new art school in Mount Rainier open to all had an open house, with art from community members (including me). Classes begin soon. There were demos, cotton candy, and spin art.*

Also went to Gateway Arts Center building in Brentwood -- 39th Street Gallery (2nd floor):
CENSUS: A PHOTOGRAPHIC SURVEY
Portraits of Business owners, Staff and Artists in the Gateway Arts District by photographer Tom Wolff.
Some really evocative portraits of people along the Route 1 Gateway Arts District, from Riverdale south to Mount Rainier.  (The invite.)

On the ground floor, there was a Latin American/Caribbean art exhibit in the MNCPPC space.

A few of the building's resident artists had their studios open as well:

Linda Lee Uphoff -- mixed media.

She was out, so she was the only one whose art I took a picture of. :) Her work seems to have some origins in Asian sumi-e (Chinese ink brush painting), but it is definitely her own. It is abstract work using the ink at different strengths, and I noticed on some pieces she collages with pieces from other things she has painted.

--Really a sumi-e vibe here. I love it.

Note: None of my pics do the art justice. Go see it for yourself.

Other resident artists whose studios were open:

Tom Cardarella -- painting -- here's his site, but it seems his current work is much bigger and abstract-- like spaces you could walk into.

Charles Reiher--acrylic -- plays with thickness and transparency of paint-- make works by dripping paint on canvas or paper.

Also went north to stop in here:

Square One Gallery Reception
Saturday, September 18
artdc Gallery
5710 Baltimore Ave
Hyattsville, MD

--The work of six University of Maryland undergraduates, alumni, and faculty.
Highlight for me:

Christie Liberatore --UMD undergrad in the department’s honors program. She was also the recipient of the prestigious CAPA scholarship for the fine arts. Her paintings are expressive and emotional, often exhibiting feelings of nostalgia. Her subject matter is chosen as a result of her family’s foray into the restaurant business.

I love the brushwork and the confident, close-cropping of her subjects.  She had another painting of a toaster that I liked as well.
