I like the original by the Talking Heads, from Speaking In Tongues (1983). Also liked the version in the movie Wordplay (2006). Turns out Shawn Colvin did it. In response the the lj poster where I found out about Shawn Colvin covering TH (
ennienyc), I talked about how the
Talking Heads are good at presenting potentially scathing lyrics in a glib, upbeat way. I listened to them all through college.
To wit, the song "The Big Country" from More Songs About Buildings And Food (1978): "I wouldn't live there/If you paid me to." Which, if you listen to it, you have to follow with "Found A Job." Great songs. I also like the album 77 a lot.
Also, "The Big Country" is always in my head when I fly to the midwest.
