3x19 The Devil Went Down to Georgia

Feb 01, 2009 19:02

The family of college student Emily Schneider in Athens, Georgia, live in fear. The girl rants and shrieks about the Apocalypse all day. The local priest comes to visit her and Emily says she knows what he really is. The priest’s eyes turn black - he is possessed. Emily grins and stretches out her hand. White light fills the room. The priest - and the demon inside him - fall over dead.

Frannie Mulvaney shows up at Sam and Dean’s motel claiming that she’s found a way to try to break Dean’s deal. (When asked where Charlie is, she simply answers, “Jail,” and does not elaborate.) She says that they need to look at the lore surrounding deals with the devil and that again and again it points to a way out - someone should enter into a competition with Lilith for Dean’s soul. Dean objects - he doesn’t want someone else putting their soul on the block for him. Frannie proposes that Sam simply offer his life - Lilith wants him dead back enough that she should jump at it. Dean still isn’t buying - he doesn’t want anything to do with this, but Sam argues for it. If he loses, he says, things will just go back to how they were before Dean made the deal and nothing says that Sam will go to Hell if he dies. Dean tells him to find another way and thanks Frannie for trying.

Frannie goes out in the parking lot and waits in her truck. After a minute, Sam opens the passenger door and gets in. He tells Frannie that Dean will be fine by morning. They take off and end up in an abandoned warehouse where Sam summons Lilith. Lilith’s Agent appears and at first rejects the idea of a competition but then is persuaded. He tries to bargain for Sam’s soul as the prize, but Sam says that’s a deal-breaker. Lilith’s Agent says he can’t believe the Winchester are finally starting to learn from their past. Lilith’s Agent tells Sam that a demon is possessing Emily Schneider and has been killing other demons. Lilith wants the Emily-demon dead. If Sam can kill the demon in 72 hours, he can win back Dean’s soul. Sam agrees.

As Sam and Frannie leave, he confesses first that Bela stole the Colt and then that he exorcised Ruby and doesn’t know where her knife is - it wasn’t on her when she died. Frannie is angry and wants to know how they are supposed to kill the Emily-demon now. Sam wants to try to find Ruby’s knife now but Frannie convinces him that they need to get to Athens. They put in a call to Bobby and he says he’ll see if he can come up with anything to help them.

In Athens, Dean catches up to them. Bobby has given them up. They all go to see Emily Schneider and try to catch her in a Devil’s Trap but fail. Perplexed, they head to a motel to do research. Dean comes back from the library with interesting news - Emily has been raised by her stepmother, who married her father when Emily was very little. Her real mother died in a house fire on Emily’s six-moth birthday. They realized that Emily is one of Azazel’s special children, although they thought them all dead.

They return to Emily and realize that she’s not possessed, just driven mad by her demon-blood talents. They also realize that Lilith’s Agent has violated the deal - Sam cannot kill the demon possessing Emily because she’s not possessed. They summon Lilith’s Agent and Sam says the competition is void. The Agent argues some with them but has to concede in the end. Then they bring Emily into the room and she kills Lilith’s Agent but not before he fatally wounds her. She thanks Frannie and the Winchesters for setting her free before dying, and warns them that it’s all been set into motion now, and can’t be stopped.

Frannie tells Dean that she’s sorry her plan didn’t work. He thanks her for trying anyway. Frannie urges him to call Chandler before his time is up and get absolution. Dean doesn’t think this will help him with his deal. Frannie doesn’t think it will either, but she thinks it’s important he do so anyway.

Quotes

Sam (to Frannie): Why do you care anyway? I didn't even think you liked Dean all that much.
Frannie: I don't. But you know. (pause) I've got brothers, too, Sam.

Dean: You flying solo? Where's Charlie?
Frannie: Jail. Again.

Sam (to Frannie): You're going to double-cross the demon?
Frannie: Of course I'm going to double-cross the demon. How did you think this was going to work? We're going to send his ass back to Hell where he belongs.

Frannie (to Dean): You should at least call Chandler, before, you know.
Dean: Thanks, but I don't think confession is going to do the trick here.
Frannie: Not to get rid of the deal, but don't you want everything square before you go, Dean? I mean, just so that you know.

Dean: What's your plan here? Sam calls up the Reaper for a little Battleship or Twister and I get to walk away? Provided Sam doesn't suck, I mean.

Sam (to Frannie): Stop acting like you're Dean's lawyer in this. You're not. You don't know anything about being a lawyer.
Frannie: I watch Law and Order! I know how these things work!
