Halloween tribes

So Halloween this year was pretty fantastic. Oct. 22 I judged the annual kids costume contest at Brookfield Zoo. They always invite local reporters to do it, though last year I couldn't due to family being in town. But you get free admission for yourself and whoever you want to bring in exchange for about an hour watching kids and often their parents showing off their get-ups. There were some really awesome and creative ones like a little girl dressed as a jellyfish, a whole family dressed as the Cat in the Hat, the goldfish and Thing 1 and Thing 2 and a pretty impressive headless horseman. After the contest we hung around for the rest of the day taking in the beautiful day and the animals who seemed to be enjoying it. A lot of the enclosures are arranged so you can get really close to animals and we were nose to nose with a pair of lions, a grizzly bear and this enormous, very spiky African porcupine.

This weekend we drove up to Madison to crash with Dan and hit up the annual downtown Freakfest, an insane party where you're not welcome if you're not in costume. Dan was going as The Monarch from The Venture Bros. so we decided to group concept it up. Kev went as Dr. Orpheus and was fine with me going as Dr. Girlfriend even thought it's weirdly like a couples costume with Dan. We wanted to get Mike to go as Rusty Venture but he had to do law school stuff.

Last year Kev and I had gone as Poison Ivy and Two Face and saw a few other people dressed the same and maybe waved and smiled. But going in a niche costume is totally different. We ran into two other Monarch and Dr. Girlfriend pairs, one who also had a Rusty Venture and Molotov Cocktease, and another Dr. Orpheus. In all instances the other groups freaked out and demanded we take pictures together. I think it's just a tribe thing where if you see other people who appreciate an obscure show enough to dress up as characters from it it's very exciting. Do be fair we were super jazzed to take the pictures and be in them too.

Other fantastic costumes we saw were a Megamind and Red Skull pair with amazingly perfect leather jackets and makeup, two drag and one straight Black Swans, three guys doing Team Rocket and Ash, a Dexter victim dressed seemingly only in plastic wrap and a fantastic Cruela Devil waiting tables at the cocktail bar where we finished out the night. Pictures to come on Facebook.
