If good news and bad news have to balance, I'll take this outcome any day

The last few weeks I've been interviewing and doing stuff for a job I was applying for, which would be creating stories and other content for a pair of Web sites belonging to two local radio stations. Things moved very fast and I went from having an interview Friday to a second interview Monday to being told Tuesday I was one of two final candidates and could I edit some stories and submit some pictures to show that I could do the job? The decision came down this week and they went with the other guy. It was, however, the nicest rejection I have ever received. Two of the women who interviewed called me to say it was an agonizing decision and in the end they went with the other candidate only because he'd worked with one of their producers before. But they said they wanted to call me to say that I was awesome and one of the smartest people they'd ever met and they'll keep their eyes open for future opportunities.

I was a little bummed because it sounded like a cool job and I wanted some stability since freelancing has become increasingly unreliable.

Then Thursday morning Kevin gets word that he has a second interview at Allston Trading. The second interview amounted to going out to a nice steakhouse for lunch so the head of the tech division could meet him. Unbeknown to us the decision had basically already been made to hire him. He got an offer on the ride back to the office. We're ecstatic. It sounds like a phenomenal job with plenty of room for growth and one that I think Kevin will thrive at. He has to get a crash course in computers but it's a subject that interests him so I think he'll have to work hard but he'll be fine. Last night he took me out to a fancy dinner to celebrate. Kevin's job hunt has taken a long time but man did it pay off. I'm so glad that we didn't wind up moving to Wisconsin or something. And if I have to keep freelancing a little longer, that now feels way more OK.
