A beach dog in Thailand

The A.V. Club Web page has undergone a huge overhaul and one of the new features is pictures to go with every user. I dug through my e-mail yesterday looking for one and came across a picture from Thailand I had totally forgotten about. It's a great shot of me and a dog standing on a cliff with the ocean at my back.

The picture came from a hike we took on a little island off the coast. The payoff was supposed to be a spectacular ocean view but we weren't sure where that actually was. As we were trekking we found a dog. There are tons of wild dogs in Thailand but this one just seemed especially cute and happy and followed us as we walked sometimes behind, sometimes at our side and sometimes running in front of us. We were starting to get worried about where we were I decided we should just follow the dog and he did, in fact, lead us to the coast where I asked a friend to take a picture with me and our guide.

Seeing the picture put me on a huge Thailand nostalgia kick. I spent way too much time last night just rereading my entries from my time there and I am so happy I took the time to post actively about my experiences and I only wish I had posted more. The story of the dog on the beach wasn't there. But I found that there were things I have already forgotten about the trip and I'm so glad I have a record of them.

It's always strange going back and reading my own personal writing. There are things in there besides the travel log about grad school, about my dreams and goals, that are dramatically different now. When I was in 9th grade my English teacher has us write a letter to our future selves as our first assignment. I got it in the mail right before I graduated from high school. It made me cry. And it makes me wonder what the Sam four years in the future will think looking back at these writings.
