What is one (or what are some) of the happiest moments you've ever had in your life?

Share whatever you like - but I encourage you to really set the scene for us. How were all your senses engaged? Who was involved, where, when? Why was the experience significant? How does it make you feel now to think of it?

My greatest moments of happiness usually involve other people, particularly loved ones.

I loved (and still love!) Christmas when I was a child. Finding the tree (with the root ball still attached, so we could plant it after Christmas!), finding exactly the right thing for each person, the food, watching everyone open their presents, having everyone together with nothing to do except be happy in each other presence... I know now, as an adult, that my mother was probably working madly behind the scenes, since we had a huge meal on Christmas day, and I know how much energy goes into an act of love like that.

My life as an adult is filled with happy moments. My wedding day was so extremely happy! My family was all there, friends from all over the country... We designed the wedding we wanted and it was so meaningful, in a way that a traditional wedding could never have been. I know that for other people, going through a rite of passage in a traditional way is what brings them joy. I can understand that, but that isn't what Joe and I thrive on.

My handfasting was another happy day. D and I had thought for a long time about it, and planned it to be what we (and our families) wanted it to be. A friend made our cake, and our families and friends were present for the ceremony. It was very much a celebration of our transition to being handfasted, with enthusiastic support from our families and community.

As I'm thinking about this, I realized that one of the things that makes an event happiest for me is the work and anticipation beforehand. Christmas, the wedding, the handfasting... These are events that require thought beforehand, require coordination with other folks, and then the joy of the actual day itself. I think for me, anticipation makes events all the sweeter.

re: "...anticipation makes events all the sweeter."

Seems like a good thing to know about yourself!
