I was looking up some information, to find if the Mormon church itself had donated money to Prop 8. As I was reading the comments from the church, at first I was really upset.
Then I laughed.
The anti-marriage arguments are becoming ridiculous. Anti-marriage organizations like NOM and the LDS church are beginning to run out of ideas. Studies about how kids with gay parents do okay and studies about gay animals and that sort of thing are blowing their arguments out of the water. Not to mention that bitching technology they've developed to make sperm from women (they're working on male eggs next), meaning gay families can have biological kids (although why the anti-marriage folks want more kids when the world is overpopulated as it is I don't know.)
In the past few months, there have been only a few arguments thrown at me such as:
1. "We must protect and cherish traditional marriage!"
-If you really wanted to do that, go all the way and make women property and make interracial couples illegal.
2. "They would flaunt it."
-Someone I know actually made this argument, that he didn't want them going around and being all smug and flaunting their married status. Does this really need a counter-argument.
3. "The kids would be made fun of!"
-Then let's make it so parents who wear glasses, are ugly, are overweight, are of color, are poor, are rich, have "dirty jobs," or are of a rare and/or non-Christian religion cannot have or adopt children. The kids might get made fun of!
4. "The Bible blahblahblah etc etc"
-First. Fucking. Amendment. Bitches. (Also, anyone want to sign my petition to ban pork? It's against my religion, therefore no one is allowed to have it at all. Just sign here! _______)
5. "It's gross!"
-So's your face. Just kidding. But seriously, let me repeat part of the list from number 3 -"...are ugly, are overweight, etc." Don't let them marry, they might gross some people out!
6. "It's just a piece of paper."
-Well, I could go on about the thousands of rights and such that they are missing out on. But really, if you are so sure it's just a piece of paper, why won't you let them have it?
7. "Beastiality, pedophilia, polygamy etc etc"
-...Dogs cannot sign paper. Kids are not allowed to sign legal documents. Polygamy would be really hard legality-wise, it actually would change the institution.
Of course, I just went through the ones that I haven't found studies to prove them wrong for (i.e. the "it's not natural" argument).
Anyway, the point is, I don't hate the Mormon church any more. I pity them. They're desperately scrabbling for a foothold in a society that is less and less conforming to narrow viewpoints.
