Yay Boson-consistent-with-discovery-of-Higgs-Boson.
So nice to hear of interest in physics, let alone science, from the general public. Usually, it only happens when there is a disaster of some magnitude, and then it is handwringing.
Not too long ago, science in the U.S. had bipartisan support. Now, science means “wasteful tax and spend” on the Right, and science means genetically engineered food horrors and nuclear waste on the Left. To be scientifically ignorant is actually viewed by many as being connected with the people, rather than an appalling lack of education. Even worse, opinions are espoused in the absence of knowledge (like “global warming is a farce” said by folks that did not pass algebra).
While the announcements today are really just a small part of the continuity of applied science in progress, it still makes me proud of my race, and glad for the awesome science education I got to receive and practice.
Just some thoughts.
