Character Name: Kate Kane || Batwoman
Canon source: DC comics
Personality: Kate Kane is quite different from the Silver Age Kathy Kane. While Kathy Kane was designed to be Batman’s love interest and used weapons like lipstick and a compact, Kate Kane is independent, a lesbian, and has no problem punching people in the face. Although to the public she is a beautiful heiress (with somewhat questionable goth clothing and makeup), she is later seen with her father, training her body in order to become the best protector of the city. The most current Kate Kane is shown to be more alternative than all of her past incarnations, harder from the curves life has thrown at her. She wears heavy black eyeliner and sports several tattoos. Her personal life is in shambles. Her late nights are ruining her love life. Current girlfriend, lawyer Anna, gives her the heave-ho, thinking that Kate was cheating on her with various women and believes that “elite” girls can’t be trusted.
She is a mature, down to earth woman who dons twos masks-the Batwoman mask and the mask she has to wear in public in order not to embarrass her father and step-mother, who she has a slight distaste for. She is publicly out as a lesbian (even going as far as losing her position in the army because of it and severing ties with Renee who wasn't ready to tell the world) and almost seems to take pride in making her stepmother cringe because of it. Kate is who she is and doesn't care what anyone else has to say about it. Her family life is an odd one. Her father treats her with some semblance kindness, but often like a colonial to a soldier. They are seen hugging when Kate recalls a past trauma, but her father tells her that they “soldier on”. “Soldiering on” without complaint, despite everything, is her motto in life. However, he accepts and supports her no matter what-- there is no one closer to Kate than her father.
When wearing the Batwoman mask, Kate is confident, confrontational, and in control. She knows her stuff (especially about enemies) and isn’t afraid to let Batman know it. When out of the mask, Kate is so tired from crime fighting that she can’t even defend herself properly when her girlfriend accuses her of cheating. She’s still haunted by a past traumatic experience (her mother and twin sister being killed). Her scar from her stabbing still pains her-both mentally and emotionally.
Kate’s cool façade can easily be broken by Renee, who knows exactly which buttons to push to get Kate to snap. While Kate wants to protect the city, she is also looking for a stable love. There is evidence pointing to the fact that she is still hung up over Renee (considering she thought she saw her in her poisoned state), since they never broke up properly. However, Kate knows that although she loves Renee, it just isn’t enough to make a relationship work.
History:
http://www.comicvine.com/batwoman/29-9052/ Strengths: As Batwoman, Kate has no superpowers. Instead, she relies on weaponry that she based off of Batman’s arsenal and martial arts. Her father, an ex-colonal in the army, provides her with weapons that are modeled after army artillery. Nightwing, feeling particularly generous one Christmas Eve, gave her an official Batarang, scoffing at her knock off version. She is cool, calm, and collected, proficient at hand to hand combat and using weapons.
Weaknesses: Kate is very emotionally fragile, especially when it comes to what happened to her sister (who turns out to be her enemy, Alice) and mother but also Renee. It is almost like she has no idea how to act when not Batwoman. It becomes harder and harder, as time goes on, for her to live this double life. Physically, the scar over her heart is still a problem and obvious weakness.
Preferred drop-in point: Manhattan
