Drabble - It's More than That

“It’s wrong.” Two words whispered into a soft shoulder.

Gentle arms envelop and comfort, a tender nuzzle and a response is spoken against the smooth skin of her neck. “It feels right. This feels right. It feels like something you want.”

Breaking away, she closed her eyes and stated, “Doing this would hurt her more than anything I could ever do.”

Insistent arms try to pull her back. “But you aren’t denying you want this.”

She resists, brushing off the welcome embrace. “I can’t hurt her like this. It would hurt her to the depths of her soul.”

“Don’t you think you deserve to be happy? To have what would make you happy?”

“It might make me happy for a short period of time, but would devastate me in the future, maybe forever. And it’s just not worth it.”

“I’m not worth it?” Pleading eyes cling to her, begging her to relent.

“Don’t try that. I love you and maybe if things had been different...”

“We can make things different.”

“And destroy the lives around us? Break everyone and everything we care about and make everyone choose sides?” The brunette shook her head.

Arms slack at her sides, her chin dropped to her chest. “So you’ll settle.”

“I’m not settling. I’m choosing. And I’m happy. We’re happy.”

“You’ll never know what you missed. What we could have become.”

“I know that I have stayed true to my principles and my friends.”

She raises eyes bright with tears. “But not to your self. Is that enough?”

There is no response.
