Part Three: Nightmares and Stories

His mother sang him to sleep when he was a young boy. When he turned twelve, he told her he was too old for bedtime songs, but he secretly listened to her sing to Gray. He could never sleep without a song before bed. Mom's songs always kept him from having bad dreams. Gray's disappearance ended all the songs. He'd had his first nightmare that night at fifteen. He never told his mother. He was sure she'd laugh at him for being such a baby. When he got to school, the nightmares increased. He didn't tell anyone at first, but his teachers started to notice. His second week into Fall, he was sent to Miss Bliss's office when his classes were finished for the day to talk. She was very good at listening and solving problems, he was told.

Miss Bliss's office was cozy. She had a small settee and two matching armchairs, a small wooden tea table, a desk, desk chair, bookshelves and a fireplace.

“Sit anywhere you like,” she said, in her quiet, comforting voice.

She set a pot of tea and a plate of biscuits on the tea table.

“Fresh biscuits and tea,” she said, “an advantage of being on staff.”

He sat across from Miss Bliss.

“What's troubling you?” she asked.

“I've been having...nightmares,” he said.

“About what?”

“My brother disappearing, my dad dying, and being chased by creatures I can't see.”

“Who's chasing you?”

“The creatures who invade my world. I've seen their spaceships, but never them. They make the most horrible howling sound.”

“When did these nightmares begin?” asked Miss Bliss.

“A few months ago, after they invaded my homeland,” he said.

“When you wake up from another nightmare, remember this story,” said Miss Bliss.

And, she told him a story her mother used to tell her before bedtime when she was a little girl. A story about a planet with a burnt orange sky and silver trees. It was called Gallifrey. He liked that story.

“Thank you, Miss Bliss,” he said.

He became a regular visitor to Miss Bliss's office. She would tell stories while they had tea and biscuits. He never had nightmares after that.
