A City of Silver and Salt

I had a dream that I was the store manager of a gas station in a place where there was no sky (not necessarily underground, but like there was another layer of city above the layer where the gas station was) and without warning during one of my shifts, my boss - who happened to be Donald Trump - showed up to give me my regular performance evaluation. The last time we had spoken, he had told me to watch out for a woman with short, light colored hair. He had given me a grainy photograph and a name, but little else.

And so I led off the meeting telling him about how I had hired this woman to work for me because it would put me in a better position to keep an eye on her. There was more I wanted to tell him regarding two other people that he had specifically mentioned in the past, but he interrupted me by pulling out a manila folder full of blurry photo negatives and rough photocopies (like, done on one of those older copy machines that only understood black and while but couldn't reproduce shades of grey). He began to ask me about a message that I had written that he did not have a copy of, but he had a copy of the page that had been beneath it and therefore had been able to make out some of the message's contents through the indentations on that page.

During this I asked a question - I don't remember what it was - and his response was to launch into a long and winding parable that began with "Once upon a time mankind made a city entirely out of silver and salt..." And in that moment I became starkly aware of the fact that I was definitely dreaming, because I was one hundred percent certain that I had had a different dream some time long ago where completely different circumstances had led to Donald Trump telling me that exact same parable. This realization that I was dreaming was so strong that it forced me awake.
