For the first time ever, I am writing my LOST recap uninfluenced.
As in I haven't read any other recaps yet, or looked at the messageboards. The only thing I have looked at is the screencap page on Dark UFO, to steal screencaps. :)
Though I would recommend the recaps on EW.com, because that guy knows his shit. I'm reading his directly after I write this.
So, I'll start off with a couple questions that are bothering me about last night:
+ How did the plane fly directly over the underwater island? When the original Oceanic 815 crashed, they were 1,000 miles off course.
+ In the universe where the Losties are still on the island, what the hell are Rose and Bernard up to?!
+ In the universe where the island ends up underwater, can we assume that Widmore, Ellie, and Ben die? If so, that means that Penny and Daniel don't exist! A Desmond & Penny-less universe? I don't think I like this so much.
+ OK, so Walt is old now, so it is going to be kinda hard to have him as a little boy on the plane. Are we just forgetting about their characters completely? Or what about all of the tailies?! NIKKI AND PAULO?!?! At least they included Frogurt into the mix.
+ The only reason Locke wanted to go on a walkabout was because Abbadon came to his hospital to suggest it. No Widmore = no Abbadon = why the hell was he blathering on about walkabouts?!
+ What was Claire doing in LA? The only reason she was going there in the first place was because the psychic told her that a couple was going to adopt her baby there. Except that there was no couple, and the psychic knew the plane was going to crash and that's why he sent her on it. So no plane crash + no couple in LA = I wonder why Claire is in LA?
OK, this whole parallel universes thing is totally brilliant. To be honest, while I thought it was cool that the LOST writers were totally fucking with us, I was pretty disappointed last season when the bomb exploded. They spent the entire last season and a half explaining why you can't change the past, only to, you know, change the past. But having the bomb explosion break universe's timeline into two strings completely fixes that problem.
So in the universe where the bomb has blown up and Oceanic 815 doesn't crash, we're going to see some crazy butterfly effect action going on and it is going to be awesome. We've seen in the first five seasons that they were all affected by the island prior to going there -- I guess the easiest example would be Locke, because he was visited by Richard and Abbadon directly. And they were all visited by Jacob. So, in this universe, Shannon doesn't leave her abusive boyfriend and Desmond is on a plane to LA and Jack randomly has longer hair instead of a buzz cut. Because the length of Jack's hair is totally dependent on whether or not the island exists.
The camera goes down underneath the plane and into the ocean, and we see the island under water! Very cool. I wonder if the two alternate realities will ever cross over, if that makes sense. Like, I wonder if the reality where Juliet and Kate and Sawyer, etc. all time traveled and are still on the island... I wonder if they are underneath the ocean. I used to have a theory that the island was underwater, back at the end of season 3 and beginning of season 4. The LOST promo photo back then showed the island and the ocean in front of it, and then a city underneath, like a reflection. Plus they had to take a submarine to get there plus Faraday said that the sunlight didn't shine down on the island correctly.
This is also me being kind of crazy.
So Kate is busy chillin in a tree out on the island. And she finds Sawyer and Jack, and the hatch! They've time traveled back to present time.
Juliet dies, AGAIN, and I am kind of tired of her dying. And "Jacob" appears to Hurley. Now, they are on the island so it COULD be the smoke monster being a dead person. But Hurley can also see real dead people (haha) so it could actually be Jacob. But Jacob mentions the guitar case to Hurley, and seeing as though the guy in black (Black Locke) wouldn't have any way of knowing about the guitar case, I'm going to go ahead and assume that was really Jacob.
On the plane, Charlie overdoses on heroin and has got a bag shoved down his throat and almost dies, but Jack saves him. Then Charlie gets all pissed off and tells Jack that he was supposed to die. What would be really cool but sad and a total rip-off of a major horror movie franchise would be if in the alternate universe, they all died in the order that they died on the island.
But anyway, Charlie is alive and Claire is in LA and maybe they will cross paths because they are ~destined~ to be together.
Over at the beach, Bram and some of the other Shadow of the Statue people force Ben to take them inside the foot to see Black Locke. Black Locke informs them that Jacob is dead, and they freak out and start shooting at Locke. So Locke turns into the smoke monster!!!!!!!!!! Best part of last night's episode for sure. So the Shadow of the Statue people all die, and Bram surrounds himself with ash (like the ash they find in season one! We totally called that one. Also in the classic Disney film The Little Princess). But the smoke monster knocks him out of the ash circle and he gets a stake to the heart. Poor Bram (Stoker).
BTW, when Juliet is dying and Sawyer is holding her, she says, "We could get coffee sometime. We can go Dutch." I wonder if she is drifting in and out of consciousness between this reality and the alternate reality. What would be INSANELY cool would be if Sawyer and Juliet meet somewhere in LA, and she says this exact quote to him. It would make sense, because how else would she have known that exploding the bomb "worked"?
I am still pretty perplexed as to why Desmond is on the plane, and why he disappears, but I'm sure we'll see more of this later so whatevs. I just wanted to mention that when we saw him on the plane, I noticed he was reading a book and I couldn't see the cover. I was like, "If he is reading Our Mutual Friend, I am going to FLIP OUT." But according to this screencap, he is reading a book by Salman Rushdie. So we're safe.
So, the Oceanic peeps "lost" Jack's father. I'm starting to think that the Christian we saw on the island was not a manifestation of the smoke monster. Especially considering the body was gone from the coffin, and in John Locke's case, the body was still there. Anyway, this whole part kind of weirds me out so whatevs.
So, Kate, Jin, and Hurley bring Sayid into the temple, and get attacked by some Others! The temple looks pretty sweet and I kind of want to live there. Also, there's some sort of fountain of youth inside, which I totally called several seasons ago. Booyah.
Hurley tells the Others that Jacob sent them, and we get to see what's inside the guitar case! It's a wooden ankh!
And the Asian dude breaks open the ankh, and there's a list inside from Jacob. Jacob has to be all-knowing or something because why the hell would he have this random list? I bet he knew all along he was going to die, too.
So they dunk Sayid into the fountain of youth, which has become brown since Jacob's passing. Hmm.
Sayid dies and then comes back to life.
Meanwhile, Kate escapes from the law, and we see Claire! Because she's sitting in the backseat of a cab, we can't see if she's pregnant or not. I'm going to go ahead and venture to say that she's not, because I think that would be awesome! Baby Aaron doesn't exist!
You know who else won't exist? Baby Ji Yeon! Especially with Jin being such a dick and all.
The Others find out that Jacob is dead and freak outtttt.
Then, Locke and Jack have a special bonding moment. A Guy's Afternoon In. A GAI.
And we get the best line of the episode!
"Nothing is irreversible."
Best line of the series?
"Destiny is a fickle bitch." - Benjamin Linus
So Black Locke comes out of the foot and goes over to Richard Alpert. "It's nice to see you out of your chains." I'm assuming the "chains" are what connected Alpert to Jacob, so that Alpert could not be hurt. But now Jacob is dead so Black Locke can do whatever he wants.
This screenshot isn't so great because I had to take one myself because I couldn't find one on the interwebs... but does this look like an aged Juliet to you or what?!
Anyway, there's all this talk of the "bad guys" and the "good guys", and I'm starting to think that Black Locke is the good guy and Jacob is the bad guy. I think it would be a cool twist. Like, Jacob and the Others are all abusing the powers of the island and the fountain of youth and are all greedy and stuff, and Black Locke just wants to protect the island. I think all Ben cares about is the island as well, which is why Black Locke didn't kill him when he was "judged" down in the temple.
While he didn't really do anything important or worth mentioning this episode, my Asian ghostbusting boyfriend was in this episode a lot, and I approve.
Let's make out.
OK, so, I didn't have a Livejournal back in 2000 (Did Livejournal exist in 2000?) but if you knew me back then, you may remember this, because I talked about it a lot. So, back in February of 2000, The Smashing Pumpkins released the album Machina: The Machines of God and they said there was some sort of secret message in the album, which we all refer to as the "Machina Mystery". Well, the "Machina Mystery" ended up being that they all just playing the part of a rock star, and that on May 23rd they were breaking up, and there were all these clues in the album artwork and songs that were supposed to point to this.
See, there is this artwork from the Machina booklet:
They were super into alchemy at the time, and the numbers 5 and 23 were significant, but I can't remember how. Anyway, you see at the bottom how there is that key, and inside the key is the number 5 and then below it is the number 23.
Anyway, last night Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse announced that the last episode of LOST would air on May 23rd. And that's kind of weirding me out. The decade has officially come full circle.
Also, why does everything good in life end of May 23rd?!
Anyway, I'm off to read all of the other LOST blogs and messageboards on the internet. I've been dying to all day.
