Rhodes - Day Two

Mar 18, 2012 17:29

Day Two began much more sedately, with a gentle meander down to the leafy courtyard for a briefing from our holiday rep who generally told us to go and explore Lindos for ourselves and offered a selection of day trips for our amusement. Since only three of our number had surfaced by this time, snap judgements about which excursion was most picturesque (and relevant provisional bookings) were made.

The remainder of the daylight hours were largely spent by, or in, the largest of the pools at the resort. Laura and Charlie executed underwater handstands which would put Esther Williams to shame, and even Amy was tempted into the pool for some floating lessons.

Though the hotel bar appeared worryingly to cater towards the tourist market, the Greek fayre on offer was both freshly sourced and deliciously tasty as well as reasonably priced. The shady courtyard made for a welcoming environment, even if the waitress did launch an entire set of cutlery in Ewan's direction.

The afternoon passed in similar fashion to the morning and I was even tempted poolwards. Once I discovered that there was no possibility of straying out of my depth, I even managed a passable breast-stroke, much to Amy's severe disappointment. That proved too much effort, though, and I resorted to the ways of a "Louche Lilo Pilot" (copyright Nicola Coffield).

Dinner was delayed due to the discovery of happy hour at the bar, but after a jolly happy less-than-hour, we took ourselves down the hill to the narrow winding streets of Lindos, through the tourist shops, until a nice friendly waiter enticed us to his rooftop terrace. Although Lindos is nestled into a hillside on the coast, the town is mostly separated from the sea by the rocky outcrop which is home to the Acropolis. Every restaurant in Lindos worth its salt (or olive oil) has a rooftop terrace with a view of the floodlit history. It is somewhat disconcerting watching diners on the the nearby terraces, though - a bit like being able to see into your neighbour's garden. However, our waiters were more than friendly and the complimentary ouzo/banana liqueur went down a treat.

A cheeky stop at the supermarket on the way home allowed us to pick up a wine or two to drink at the pool bar after-hours, and all in all we made it through the day without managing to offend too many of our neighbours.
