Summary: My take on the significance of Jack's quote "If you choose to lock your heart away, you'll lose her for certain" set in an AU where Jack & Will actually got the opportunity to have an idle chat some time shortly after Will's little tea party with Davy and Beckett.

Locking Your Heart Away
Jack stared out to sea, as Will approached him. From what Will had just heard from Beckett, Jack seemed like he could use a friend. That is, if Beckett had been truthful.
“So…” Will began “You and Cutler Beckett?”
Jack looked at Will and half smiled “You seem surprised.” Jack’s smile faded and he looked back out to sea. “Why else did you think he hated me so much?”
“And you?”
Jack looked at Will, surprised, and then looked away as he searched for the right words. This was clearly not something Jack felt comfortable discussing. Finally, he spoke “Let’s just say I know a little something about people locking away their hearts.”
Will wondered if Jack was talking about Beckett’s heart, or his own. He decided not to probe further, but a question still lingered in his mind. He was not quite sure how to ask it. “How…?” he began, before looking down at the deck, embarrassed. He looked back up at Jack and tried again “I mean… with the…” Will’s eyes traveled down to Jack’s crotch in a subconscious effort to get the rest of his question across. Jack smiled, both at Will’s obvious discomfort, and out of relief at the comical change of subject. Time to mess with Dear William’s mind as much as possible.
“It’s really not that difficult. I could show you some time, if you’d like.”
With a wink, Jack left a confused Will to ponder the meaning of what he’d just said.
