Regarding Kurt in fanfic
To spare the non-gleeks on my f-list, I'm cutting this post.
Warning: This rant is decidedly anti-mpreg and anti-Kurtofsky. So if that applies to you, you probably won't like what I have tos ay.
Of the students, Kurt is probably my favorite. He's my favorite to watch, write, and when he's written WELL, I am one happy camper.
Do I think Kurt's a perfect person? No. He's not perfect at all. He's bitchy, manipulative, meddlesome, and can be every bit the diva that Rachel can be. He's also, on a lot of levels, every bit the "gay kid" stereotype, but still, he's one of the most human of the bunch and I just love him to pieces.
And then there are certain things that fandom tends to do to him, and I immediately shut down.
1) Just because Sue calls him LadyFace and he's on the Cheerios, that does NOT make him a girl.
A) This means he CANNOT technically be called a soprano.
Even if he has the ability to hit the High 'F,' that technically makes him a COUNTER-TENOR. I know, you're like, Counter-tenor?? What's that??
"A countertenor is a male singing voice whose vocal range is equivalent to that of a contralto, mezzo-soprano, or (less frequently) a soprano, usually through use of falsetto."
I realize that soprano SOUNDS like a sexier epithet, but really, it's incorrect. i know that Fox is partially to blame for that, but really, that's more to blame on the promos than on the show itself. Fox? Get something wrong? Shock. Surprise. Dismay.
B) Kurt is dark-haired. NOT Brunette. The only brunettes on the show right now are Rachel and Beiste. I am not counting Tina or Santana, because I think of them as more raven-haired than brunette.
C) Kurt cannot get pregnant! M-Preg is NOT physically, scientifically possible except for that one guy who used to be a woman and while a trans-gendered!Kurt might be interesting, so far, that doesn't seem to be the case! Why can't he just adopt, people?
D) Kurt is NOT A GIRL. He is a GUY. True, he may be a far cry from your Average Joe, but people, the dude's a dude!
i) Outside of possibly lip-balm and clear nail polish, he only wears make-up on stage.
ii) The likelihood that the girls parade around in their underwear in front of him is slim to none.
iii) He does NOT refer to any male as "beautiful".
Even when he was crushing on Finn, Kurt described him as "hot" or "sexy." This is because guys just...don't refer to other guys as 'beautiful,' be they gay or straight. I can see Kurt saying something like "you have beautiful eyes" or "a beautiful voice" but describing anything else pertaining to a guy? NOT happening.
2)Kurt is GAY! GAYGAYGAYGAYGAY! Gayer than a Cher, Liza Minelli and Celine Dion Concert COMBINED with an Elton John conert on the side. He could out-gay Jack on Will and Grace.
A)This means the likelihood that he is attracted to girls is well...slim to NONEXISTENT. Do I see the potential for any of the girls to have unrequited feelings for Kurt? Sure! But for Kurt to have a love that is more than friendship for any of the Glee girls? HELL to the no.
B)Just because Karofsky kissed Kurt, that does mean love is a possibility for those two.
i) Can I buy that Karofsky might actually be crushing on Kurt? Sure...but the whole torturing the one you love thing only worked for Gilbert Blythe.
ii)Can I buy that people want to see the character Max Adler plays in a good light because they think he's hot? Sure.
But...NEWSFLASH...Karofsky, as far as we've seen, is NOT A GOOD GUY!!!
iii) Karofsky is a bully. Pure and simple. If you think that bullying is a good foundation for a healthy relationship, I worry about you.
iv) Karofsky kissed Kurt. It doesn't mean Kurt wants Karofsky to kiss him again, or even that he liked it. In fact, it seemed fairly obvious that Kurt didn't even kiss back.
Now, am I saying that I am the authority on Kurt Hummel? Absolutely not. Am I saying that my view of Kurt is the only one? Of course not. That's part of the beauty of fandom, that there's something for everyone. I realize that part of the attraction of fic is to stretch cannon. I write mostly AUs myself.
I may not personally like M-preg, but I know that there are plenty of people who do, and more power to 'em! I may not personally like secretlystraightforoneperson!Kurt, but if that's you're thing, go for it. If you're a Kurtofsky shipper, I truly don't mean to offend with this post, but I just...don't see it that way, like at all. Bottom line here, I am all for exploring new and different aspects of various characters. That's why I love to write for this fandom. So do whatever you want with Kurt, but with one caveat...ONLY IF IT MAKES SENSE IN THE UNIVERSE YOU ARE WORKING WITH.
