Thank the gods for Hallmark holidays. (part 2)

(Part 1, "The Bad" is friends locked--sorry.)

No really. Yesterday being Valentine's Day really salvaged what would otherwise have been a shitfest of a day.

The Good: I have an amazing boyfriend. He used one of his morale calls to phone me yesterday and wake me up. Most of our conversations are over skype these days, so it's always extra nice to get an actual, for-real phone call from him.

We chatted on gmail a bit during the day, which was nice, although not entirely uncommon. When I got home there was a FedEx package waiting for me. I took it upstairs with me, and as soon as I had a chance, I opened it up and discovered a beautiful, leafy plant. Now, as much as I love roses (and I do), it's always about a thousand times nicer to get a live plant that, rather than wilting and dying, will grow and flourish under my care (hopefully).

It took me a bit to identify the plant, but I finally figured out (and baronmind confirmed) that it's a Purple-Leaved Spider Wart, more commonly known as a Boat Lily. But come on! Tell me that Purple-Leaved Spider Wart isn't a cooler name.

It really is a very pretty plant. It's small and contained compared to some of the photos I saw, and it isn't flowering at the moment, but even so it's quite lovely. It's this tight bunch of sort of spiky leaves. The outside of the leaves are, in fact, purple, and the inside are green with purple-ish, pink stripes that run the length of the leaf from top to bottom.

Right now it's living in the corner of my living room on top of a narrow bookcase/media shelf. It's the only appropriate spot that I know Algernon and Rupert have yet to invade. Here's hoping Ripper's bad influence continues not to extend that far*.

Anyway, I did some brainstorming on my act, and watched a couple episodes of Scrubs before baronmind called. For the first time since he got to Kuwait the connection was solid enough that we were able to actually use the video feature of skype! It was a very, very nice way to end an otherwise not-so-great day.

I love my boy.

*I love Algernon and Rupert both, but Ripper is definitely the trouble maker--possibly this is because he's still so young, possibly this is just his personality. He's just under 4 months old at the moment, so only time will tell.
