With apologies to
chalkhorsegirl and her kitten (cat, by now) of the same name:
I'd like to officially introduce you all to Rupert.
I hit on the name early on, and immediately felt that it fit this little guy, but, remembering the kitten we all cooed over at
mutefuzzybard's final cabin party of '06, I gave the name a pass. However, yesterday I was looking at my new boarder, and thinking about how he still needs to grow into his nose and paws, and thought, "Sort of like Ron Weasley--or at least the actor who plays him in the movies. Oh my gods, Rupert! Rupert's the perfect name for this cat--shit, Marion's kitten's named Rupert." Of course, the mental process was not nearly so articulate and happened in the space of about one zillionth of a second. But it's hard to communicate at the speed of thought.
This time around, at least I knew why Rupert seemed like a perfect name, and I could work from there. Ronald? McDonald--absolutely not. Fred? No. George? No. Charlie? It'd go with Algernon well enough, but I would never be able to convince people that they were named after Algernon Moncrief and Charlie Weasley. Bill? Percy? No, no. Arthur... The best of the bunch, but still not right. Weasley? I considered this one for a long time, but in the end concluded that it's sort of an ugly sounding word. Don't get me wrong, this fictional family is full of beloved characters, but just try saying their name out loud a few times. It's ugly.
In the end, I think he was destined to be a Rupert.
