Well. I'm sorta giddy. I just got two MS messages from Assael.  During which he invited me to meet him and see his studio when I"m in the area.   As if I actually even needed any additional incentive to visit NY!   Extremely awesome.  ~ * ~

My Tia Dalma Stuff pile is bigger than I thought. I pulled out all the assorted bits I'd pulled together and ( Read more... )

0_0!!!! How could you miss Sweeney Todd? Oh, you must see this one ASAP! Also, I understand avoiding musicals as a genre, but here's a quick guide for you: American musicals made for the screen are generally more light-hearted and comedic/romantic. Stuff made for the stage is generally heavier. Anything by Sondheim is 98% guaranteed to be full of awesome (even disregarding costumes). Other good ones are Gilbert and Sullivan whose stuff can be really silly and fun, but they were awesome at their use of language (notably, 'patter songs', like "Modern Major General" in Pirates of Penzance, which are almost too fast paced and filled with words to follow, and major tongue twisters).
All of the great costumey musicals I can think of I have seen on the stage...very few have been successfully translated to the big screen. I liked Phantom of the Opera, but stage version was better (although less flashy costumes).

I have had plans to make a Mrs. Lovett outfit for con since I saw it in the theatres. I even have a good source for meat pies! :) After you watch it, you'll see what I mean....maybe, in addition to PoC, we should look at Sweeney Todd costumes? Hrmm.... ;)

I am so excited that your Tia is even closer than you thought! I better get off my lazy butt and make an Elizabeth Swann (plus size) costume. Why is there never enough time for all the costumes I want to make? *le sigh*

And if you'd like to see my full list of recommended movies for costuming (by period), email me. It's been a compilation since high school, and people keep adding to it. (and then there are movies where the costuming is just fun and bizarre).
