from father to guardian

On a wet sunday morning many years ago, little Brodie asked his father to play backyard cricket, but was completely ignored.

Puzzled, he went to the kitchen where his mother was cleaning the breakfast dishes, and asked what was wrong.

She hesitated, then proceeded to tell Brodie that the man currently tinkering away in the garage was not dad at all, but another man called John.

Brodie asked whether his dad had a twin brother called John who was staying over. Mother dismissed her child's wild imagination, and simply said that he must now call dad John.

Years later, Brodie wondered whether this event had a significant affect on his perception of relationships...
