SV - The actual source

Ok, today I had a TV at my disposal for about an hour (don't have one at home, and I was visiting my sis). SV was on one of the channels. I YAYed, and put it on. Within 10 sec I knew I wanted to change the channel. I do not actually like SV.

Just as I don't actually like HP.

I LOVE the fanfiction. I am addicted, I am awed, I am enchanted, and ( Read more... )

I never liked the soures. I did watch bits of the first season of SV, because I wanted to like the show (I LOVED Lois&Clark before), but this one I didn't enjoy. In part it was actually the lighting in the series. L&C was done with light and bright colors, well lit - comedy-like lighting. Picked your mood right up. SV had that sickly yellowish tint half the time, and other things - like they were trying too much with the sinister mood.

I stumbled onto the SV fanfic long after abandoning the show itself, and not even fanfic could make me watch it again - as evidenced by the failed attempt at my sis'.

RE Harry Potter, I enjoyed the first book, but to the point of wanting to read more. They're all too drawn out, too many details that you can't just flip through because JKR tends to tie them into some plot later on, etc. Then I got into HP fanfic, which was great. The interest prompted me to try and read the 6th book, and I couldn't even finish it. 1) I HATED Ron. I'm sure he'll be a wife beater or a hen pecked husband, Depends on who he maries.
2) I deeply despised Hermione - all that high moral ground and then cheating to get Ron on the team. And her defence - the other guy wasn't nice, he wouldn't work well with others. Riiiiiigh... and Ron was just such a sweety to everyone, and didn't make people cry. And lets face it - he's a bad player, with too much baggage.
3) Putting Hermione and Ron together is a sure way to make her a beaten wife. He'd never forgive her for being smarter and better than he is. And he has too many issues as a kid lost between the other kids in his family. He's not the good boy, he's not the eldest, he's not the troublemaker, he's not the girl, and he's not the youngest. He is invisible, fallen through the cracs, a no-body in his own family - if it wasn't for being friends with Harry. And he is resenting that Harry gives him value, and he's trying so hard to prove something, and yet he's not trying hard enough - he wasn't taught to strive and study, and he doesn't have talent to cover not doing that. He'll probably be a resentful failure, and if he's with Hermione, hell hate her so deeply that he'll use every tool at his disposal to bring her down.
3) I read Harry and Draco interraction, and it read to me like a fanfic. A really drawn out one, where it takes them a long time to get together, but still an HD fanfic. When Harry started worrying about Ginny and I caught myself stroking the page and comforting Harry that he'll soon discoved that's he's gay anyway, I decided I should just reading to preserve what illusion of sanity I still have.

So, the canon for both things didn't draw me in before, and drew me even less after reading fanfic.

The only canon that I like is in the Miles Vorkosigan fandom. The fanfiction that I read (just the "Deeper Season" and the sequel "What Passing Bells") is superb in every way, but the canon is great too. Though I do admit that the last 2 books in my mind are now replaced with the 2 fics I named - they're just that good and true to characters.

Go here:

Start with "A Deeper Season"

Move on to the sequel "What Passing Bells".

Also (but much less noteworthy, unfortunately) is the Bujold Fic Comm:

I have the same feelings for the whole Ron/Hermione thing.

Draco/Harry - fun. I imagine power play in bed after all that 'hate' and Draco's fight for superiroty. ;) I've always been more of a Snarry person...because I'm very, very bad...and because the sex is often laced with violence.

Hehe I sometimes confuse fanfic with the real thing, forgeting what happened where.

Yeah, it's just that the fanfics are sometimes so good that they're better than canon, so your mind switches them around :-P
