I just wanted to say that I LOVE the comm header.  Nice job!

Does anyone have any comm icons in that style?

BTW that's the first time I've ever seen the carpet book, lol.

Hurrah for the Magic Carpet!! (part 1,silly length limit) anonymous August 6 2007, 04:13:43 UTC
Amazing that you set up the community that guided the world to so much information the Evil Embargo Machine tried vainly to conceal, and did not partake yourself of the bounteous cornucopia provided.
(I am an embargo-opponent of the highest order, would not have obtained any of the last three HP books UNLESS blockade runners had successfully frustrated the Umbridgite restrictions, and thus unlike those who stay off public fora before D-day and then return as they read,I soak up (carefully weeding out the dubious) every possible datum UNTIL D-day and then go away until I have the book,so as to learn about it ONLY from those who have info they're officially denied. This time, thanks to the carpet,I read just about every page by the Wednesday morning before the D-day.When I came back book in hand (didn't get it until the Friday) you had closed spoil_me_dh to Anonymous commenters such as I am,so I deliver my valedictory here before clearing my even bigger backlog at alt.fan.harry-potter).
It all came out much as it could be expected to,as opposed to how I would have wanted it to.The series was a 4,000-page love letter to mortality. From when Dumbledore said "to the well-organized mind death is but the next great adventure" and announced the destruction of the Stone in the first book I knew he was a goner.Frankly, however much we must face our finitudes,it is battling against mortality that to me gives life purpose. On a basic level I suppose I prefer the attitude of He-Who-Must-Be-Called-Ickle-Tommykins over that of Dumbledore, though I in NO way endorse HWMBCIT's tactics...murdering for immortality is like raping for virginity!
So,I suppose I can deliver a summary of my peeves (no thanks to Peeves) about DH,though my expectations were low enough to be met.(BECAUSE of the carpet leak,I went ahead and got it,despite its confirming resolutions I would prefer not to have seen).
I did not want to see any form of Harry/(Not-Hermione) or Hermione/(Not-Harry),but Rowling had made clear that she was not going to head in that direction...only Ron's death,as the culmination of the Cedric-Sirius-Dumbledore death line striking ever closer to Harry, could have removed the obstacle she insisted upon to hero and leading lady pairing off.Ginny certainly did little to earn his heart this time out.I did not want to see good!Snape, for reasons perhaps most connected to my view of Dumbledore...I wanted him discredited but I wanted his Achilles heel to be HAVING TRUSTED SNAPE,right down to that utterly transparent conspiracy to die at his hands (with highly dubious dismissal of all alternatives to to drinking the poison).I either predicted or preferred that Snape prove out to be more out for himself than anyone else.
Molly taking Neville's place as Bellatrix-bane was annoying. If it had been in the context of the deceptive surface of plump-naggy-housewife falling away to reveal the true identity of uber-duellist,it might have been more bearable, but her deadliness was seen as PART OF being the plump naggy housewife, with the keep-the-children-in-the-dark attitude she showed in ORDER unrepented.
Dobby...I was never as minded to forgive him as Harry was, after all his determination to deny Harry what pleasures Harry had in life in CHAMBER.He was a good guy after that but I didn't love him.(One of my "Things you DON'T want to see in Book 7" vignettes from a.f.h-p did have a mortally wounded Dobby die in Harry's arms but at least in DH there was no deathbed revelation that Dobby was Harry's real father!)
My nominee for Biggest Plothole...the lack of reaction of all the friends, any other family, and the hundreds of patients Hermione's dentist parents must have had to their sudden delusion that they were someone else.NONE of them triggered any investigation?...to make this stick Hermione would have had to be Confunding people fulltime, with no time to hunt Hallows OR Horcruxes.

Hurrah for the Magic Carpet!! (part 2) anonymous August 6 2007, 04:40:12 UTC
OK,third or fourth time I have had to type the below, first running into the length limit and then the "prove you are a human" graphic-or-audio tests that can not be dealt with by my text-only browser.
AS...I...WAS...SAYING...
Certainly reading DH stimulates many reactions, favorable and not.Potterverse what-ifs are kindled, including by the Epilogue, and I do expect I'd get the Encyclopedia though I've never obtained the little charity books.
Now,I tend to abhor the very idea of fanfic (and most especially despise slash).Think of the person whose creations you toy with...if you respect another's work, leave it alone in their hands;if you don't,don't twist it or waste time on it.If you get an idea for a story set in someone else's "sandbox",the only ethical avenues to do something with it IMO are 1)give it to the writer unconditionally, telling them to let it fly or die as they will,or 2)ask them for permission to write it and let them edit it or have it edited,on whatever financial terms they wish.I have tried both and had satisfaction with neither nor did my suggestions please the writers. If one has one's own talent,it is best to use it on one's original creations that are merely informed by and not derivative of anything one has read.(Being older than Rowling I am quite disinclined to serve as her acolyte).
I believe I can write a better (at least to my own tastes) boy-in-contemporary-Britain-unexpectedly-offered-a-place-at-a-school-that-teaches-magic story than Rowling, and I'm not even British...but I'm under no delusion that I could write a more commercially successful one.
In light of the above, the only Potterverse scribblings I've done (on a.f.h-p) have been minimal and hypothetical...the longest a brief conversation so ferociously AU (departure point 1927) the two men speaking to each other were not nearly alive at the same time in canon.
Be that as it may,my transient desires for plothole-patching and random plotbunny notions have given me ideas for a post-Epilogue Potterfic I will never write, featuring a relationship likelier to appall people than slash, and even a couple of Snape-related side stories. If someone curious posts an email address in response,I may send a not-really-outline privately. But that is where it will lie.
So,goodbye,Harry Potter saga.Thank you, carpet leaker, for puncturing the hype.May all who've formed a community through reading HP be better for it...and where capable, better than it.
