I'm not sure if the GOF book clears any of this up--but the DVD left me with a few questions:

  • What, exactly, makes Harry have the potential to be a "great wizard"? He doesn't really seem to know what he's doing much of the time--and his power level is a result of absorbing Voldemort's powers as an infant.

  • The Tri-Wizard Tournament, with a grand ( Read more... )

The book clears most of this up, yes.

1. I'm not sure if I can answer that. You'll have to read the books to learn about that.

2. Based on who places first, second, third, an order of who enters the maze first is set up. Harry and Cedric, in the book, tied for first so they entered the maze at the same time. Then came Krum after a little while and, finally, Fleur.

3. The TriWizard Tournament used to be held every five years. But once the death toll became too high they decided it wouldn't be held anymore. This time around, they decided that only those 17 and older could participate and they would take extra precautions. Obviously, thanks to Crouch Jr, that didn't work. Also, the winner would get a lot of Galleons in prize money (I'm not sure if it's 1,000 or 10,000, I don't have the book in front of me).

4. Yes, however, a)they were never going to die, the time limit was just set up for the maximum amount of points, b)I'm not completely sure if they knew. The 'hostages' were taken the night before to McGonagall's office and placed under a sleeping spell that would automatically come off once they were above water after the task. And, no parents were present for any task other than the third one.

5. Death Eaters and the Dark Mark scare everyone. This is explained in great detail in the book by Sirius but the gist is that the Dark Mark was a symbol that had been used to show someone was killed. The example that Sirius used was that it was everyone's greatest fear to see the Dark Mark hovering over their house and know what they could find inside (their family murdered).

6. This scene was completely messed up in the movie. Cedric wasn't on guard in the book. Wormtail just came over to them, in the shadows, holding Voldemort and all they heard was Voldemort say "Kill the spare" aka Cedric and then, as quick as lightning, Wormtail killed him. In the movie however, you should know that Moody's lesson was incredibly shortened. He said that there was no countercurse for Avada Kedavra in the book. Therefore, there's no way to block it. Cedric also didn't know who the person was who was advancing toward him. For all he knew, as stated in the book, was that it was another part of the tournament. Most likely he was going to wait until he saw the person to do anything. He, obviously, didn't want to attack someone like Dumbledore and risk losing the prize of the cup, the money, and eternal glory. He would have been disqualified most likely. So yes, if it's Voldemort, one of his henchmen, or anyone who could perform the Killing Curse, you should definitely be scared.
