Quick question about DH and veelas

So....I read DH 7 times, and not until the 5th time I read it did I realize that Colin Creevey's death was shown. Why? Oh, and is it true that veelas can shoot fire?

In book 4 during the quidditch world cup, the veelas and leprichauns get into a fight.
The veelas are noted to be throwing fire.

No...I meant when they were carrying his dead body. I didn't notice that until the 5th read
